It's really long, but for anyone who is interested in historical fiction, the book Sarum, by Edward Rutherford, is really good.It is focused on the area of the Salisbury plain in England, and tracks things from 10,000 years ago up to modern times. I couldn't put it down.

Naked Pictures of Famous People by Jon Stewart4. You Can't Drink All Day If You Don't Start in the Mornin' by Celia Rivenbark5. I am reading the Jon Stewart book next; the rest may be out of order. I need something light after that Tom Wolfe gobbledygook...No. 18 gets read as soon as it's released in May no matter what book I may be on at the time.
4/5/2010 6:54:30 PM
you got alot of stuff by that sparks fella- should I know who he is?
4/5/2010 6:55:54 PM
sparks is a NC writer. he's ok in my opinion, but a lot of people really love his books. they're more popular with women but something about his tone throws me off when i'm reading.i've only read dear john so i'm trying out last song before i write him off completely.
4/5/2010 7:00:25 PM
^^The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John...the writer of sappy romantic chick flicks turned movies in some caseshe's from New Bern, so many of his novels are set in NC with a few in SCit's an easy read...and I'm so behind on the goal I really need a few easy reads. I can knock out one of his books in a day or two.^I really enjoyed most of his earlier stuff, but after his memoirs (Three Weeks With my Brother which I found very interesting as he talked about his inspiration for his first novels and some personal stuff going on in his life--like one of his sons has autism) I tried to read At First Sight and got bored...I completely gave him up, and have since gotten way behind. It was like one day I woke up and he had 6 more novels?! Gotta be nice to have a contract! That said, my favorite is The Guardian...the mystery/romance/dog themed novel.[Edited on April 5, 2010 at 7:04 PM. Reason : ]

Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) - Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson - Very highly recommended. This should be required reading for the entire universe. How We Believe - Michael Shermer - Shermer gets on my nerves. "Prove to me that God exists... What? You can't use that argument! God is unprovable! I win!" I agree with his overall point, but his execution is weak. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Washington Irving - (do these count as books? it was like 12 pages long)Enemies - Richard HarrisNow, Discover Your Strengths - Marcus Buckingham and Donald CliftonMade to Stick - Chip and Dan HeathPerfume - Patrick Süskind - Highly recommended! Pretty weird, but very intriguing.Sandworms of Dune - Brian Herbert and Kevin AndersonWhy Orwell Matters - Christopher HitchensAudiobooks (I have a lot of spare time):The Lost Symbol - Dan BrownSuperfreakonomics - Steven Levitt and Stephen DubnerLies My Teach Told Me - James LoewenSwindled: From Poisoned Sweets to Counterfeit Coffee - Bee WilsonNew Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer - Bill MaherA Traveller in War-Time - Winston ChurchillMy Life - Bill ClintonThe Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Robert Louis StevensonPale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space - Carl SaganThe House on the Strand - Daphne du MaurierThe Golden Compass - Philip PullmanThe Subtle Knife - Philip PullmanThe Amber Spyglass - Philip PullmanThe Time Machine - HG WellsThe Post-American World - Fareed ZakariaSiddhartha - Herman HesseGood Omens - Terry Pratchett and Neil GaimanGingerbread Girl - Stephen KingA Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy TooleRelentless - Dean Koontz

found TH White's "The Once and Future King" and "Book of Merlyn" for $9 at a used boo store today. They are beautiful hardcovers too, great price. I'll be reading them again now and they'll look great on our bookshelves

isn't it kinda dumb to read thru a book and be like: "there, done, moving on" If u not digressing to read up on things that interest you along the way or stopping for a while because u emotional exaustion then u not really an engaged reader or the book not worth it 52 book in 52 weeks is dumb idea. depth people! there are these whole book length things called literary criticisms, they usually kick the shit out of the actual book.

^^ i read fast & have a lot of random free timei will get on the stair climber at the gym and read for an hour 3-4 times a weeki will read my book while i'm waiting for an oil change, car detail or a dr visiti read in airports and on flights, while i'm a passenger on long car ridesi'm not 'racing' to finish books, i just read fast & have time to consume several books a month. some books take longer but i can do some lighter reading while i work through it. also i think most people may be in the mood to read but only for 30-45min and not get into a serious reading book.different books for different moods yosince jan 1...finished 1. twilight by stephenie meyer2. new moon by stephenie meyer3. dead as a doornail - book 5 by charlaine harris4. definitely dead - book 6 by charlaine harris5. all together dead - book 7 by charlaine harris6. from dead to worse - book 8 by charlaine harris7. dear john by nicholas sparks8. frommers hawaii from $80 a day by jeanette foster9. frommers kauai by jeanette foster10. dead and gone - book 9 by charlaine harris 11. grave sight by charlaine harris12. grave surprise by charlaine harris13. the lovely bones by alice sebold 14. a touch of dead by charlaine harris 15. the memory keeper's daughter by kim edwards16. the road by cormac mccarthy17. a reliable wife by robert goolrick18. fahrenheit 451 by ray bradbury19. falling angel by william hjortsberg20. lost on planet china by j. maarten troost21. what the dog saw by malcom gladwell22. showdown by tilly bagshawe (audiobook-- cheesefest)23. manhunt by janet evanovich (cheesiest audiobook evarrr)24. pirate latitudes by michael crichton25. an ice cold grave by charlaine harris

I wish I had more time to read.
4/27/2010 4:23:26 PM
I hear that. I had a lot more time to read until I became a first-time home-owner haha. Ironically our first inside project is finishing our library/reading room; I just hope I have some more time to kick back and read once its finished!
4/27/2010 4:48:04 PM
post pics of your room in the home improvements thread! i would LOVE a reading/library room of some sort and like to see how other people incorporate it
4/27/2010 7:52:40 PM
Oh I definitely will! We still have a lot of stuff to do because we have a lot of projects going on and we are both crazy busy at the moment. We have mainly just bought a few of the pieces of furniture and light fixtures at this point in time haha.Basically we are turning the formal living room into our reading room/library since a "formal living room" doesn't really serve any purpose to us. Our goal is that this turns that room into a usable, functional room, that also looks nice since it is one of the first two rooms you see in the house (the other being the dining room).Hopefully as we knock out some of the other outdoor projects we wanted to get done we can get moving on this one and I'll have some progress to post in that thread.
