Yes, the blog written by a physician in the Bay area that has $600,000 a year worth of paid subscribers and discusses Bayesian statistics, politics, medicine and science in detail is drivel.

Definitely not the slop you post.

^ it's a very popular center lefty blog. Though it does have a kooky California flare. Scott Alexander has famously had beef for over a decade with all the right wing people you are just now hearing about.

As per usual with crazy leftists he was doxxed and alienated instead of used as an asset to align against the right.

I don't know why you consider Socratic dialog drivel. It's been a perfectly fine way to illuminate an argument for thousands of years.

" But while Jeffries may be publicly agnostic on El Salvador trips like the one Reps. Robert Garcia, Yassamin Ansari, Maxwell Frost, and Maxine Dexter recently took, privately he sees the trips as having run their course. Two Democratic aides and a lawmaker who spoke to The Bulwark said that the minority leader has discouraged further excursions to the country even as pressure mounts within the party to turn up the heat on Trump for sending 238 men to a notorious prison system known for human rights abuses.

"They want to let the El Salvador stuff slow down," a senior House staffer said.

Jeffries's office declined to comment."

This is what the democrat geriatrics are afraid of. Younger democrats know and use the popularist language they’ve spent years curating out of the party

"SEIU California President David Huerta Injured, Detained at ICE
Raid in Los Angeles
Los Angeles - David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU- United Service Workers West was injured and detained at an ICE raid in Los Angeles today while exercising his First Amendment right to observe and document law enforcement activity.
Tia Orr, Executive Director of SEIU California, made the following statement:
"SEIU California members call for the immediate release of our President, David Huerta, who was injured and detained at the site of one of today's ICE raids in Los Angeles. He is now receiving medical attention while in custody.
"We are proud of President Huerta's righteous participation as a community observer, in keeping with his long history of advocating for immigrant workers and with the highest values of our movement: standing up to injustice, regardless of personal risk or the power of those perpetrating it.
"We call for an end to the cruel, destructive, and indiscriminate ICE raids that are tearing apart our communities, disrupting our economy, and hurting all working people. Immigrant workers are essential to our society: feeding our nation, caring for our elders, cleaning our workplaces, and building our homes."

I hesitated to make this point, because I personally do not view it as a problem. However, when I talk to my neighbors and co-workers, it clearly is a hurdle.

It seems to me that Dems have a “California Problem.”

I don’t need anyone to explain to me all the great things happening in California, I know the perception that it’s a failing shithole is bullshit, but thats how a big swath of the electorate views it. The protests aren’t helping with the perception (not that I think the protests should stop, but it’s reinforcing pre-conceived notions of the entire state).

I mean We've got NC Dems running for the General Assembly trying to figure out how to answer questions about high school teachers using preferred pronouns because that’s a debate out in California and the media loves that shit. The reality is the discussion in our state should be centering around local facts, like that South Carolina and Tennessee have higher starting teacher salaries than we do, or something similarly galling.

Somehow Dems have been tied to everything bad or weird that happens in California and people on the other side of the country have to have answers for those episodes, even though it has nothing to do with them. Somehow the inverse is rarely true and GOP politicians don’t have to answer for every horrible outcome in red states. I don’t get it.

I think you may have hit on part of it... Democrats in CA are, at times, outliers within their own party. Meanwhile the GOP is fairly monolithic in its assholery nationwide.

To the extent that Dems want to position themselves as the "sane alternative" to the extant monstrous incarnation of the GOP, they need to distance themselves from their crazies, especially when those crazies seem to be in relative control of the party at times.

there's some of that, and there's also the siloed media environment. There is certainly plenty of media that leans left, but the vast majority of it is only a little and mostly in where they most heavily focus their coverage. Meanwhile, Fox News and right-wing talk radio and websites (that much more heavily dominate the conversation on the right than do their equivalents on the left) are, at best, heavily skewed propaganda and at times outright divorced from reality or facts.

GOP politicians don't have to answer for horrible outcomes, because their voters are largely either unaware of those outcomes, or have been fed some twisted narrative of what happened.

Yeah, and frankly it isn't even being too progressive, it's being too Californian. There's this type of culture where you have one latina, one black lady, and one schrodinger's gay, and they enjoy doing their song and dance... but they're not serious. It's ironic, cause they are the ones going out there and doing a lot, but they're not serious. It's not even the demographics, it's not women bad or whatever, it's just that they have this system that's almost natural now where they form these troupes and just harp on everything. They don't have a commitment to progress, it's just not there.

I'm not even anti-activist or 'moderate', I'm just going between amused and annoyed on a regular basis

^^^,^

I’ll be thinking a lot about this. At first I intended to”California” to be a catch-all for crazies. Just a more codified version of the rural-urban political divide. Like I have heard people discuss an episode or politics in metropolises like Greenville, NC in a similar pattern. At the same time, the contempt seems to go to 11 when it’s California. There is something extra hated being tied to Cali.

^^I agree with the siloed environments and I would add that we have lost a lot of regional news coverage over the years and a vast, vast majority of news is nationalized now. Another form of this are the GOTCHA Xitter accounts that comb the country looking for anything they can spin as outlandish or weird. It’s bonus clickbait points if the thing happened in California. So local issues have faded from importance in general and has raised the profile of issues and episodes that I don’t think would have broken onto the national news scene 15 years ago.
