If you look at the airplane selections over time of the 0.1%, 1% and top 10%

70s and 80s: Light Jet (Elvis), Bonanza (Steve Wozniak), commercial airlines
2025: Heavy Jet (Taylor Swift), Cirrus with occasional NetJets (Director at Amazon), business class and 1980s era plane if they own.

Same will be true of helicopters for the use case of moving across populated areas quickly and it will be more accessible to that top 10% group. Something will have to fill the niche even if it’s not vtol.

Just anecdotal, but software engineering hiring seems like it's really declined since the heyday of a few years ago. Not just increased layoffs, but also a declining number of open positions.

Again, just anecdotal, without any concrete evidence to back that up.

^ I think that's mostly the interest rate and free money drying up. Before you had VC funded companies pulling talent from the big players and the smaller players hiring people from bootcamps. Today the smaller players have their run of the new grads and the startups just aren't as plentiful. The narrative and threat of AI is there and leadership/HR is definitely using that as a way to squeeze people lucky enough to find a job.

One anecdote, HackerNews (startup focused tech site) would a thousand job posts on a "monthly who's hiring thread" in 2022. Now it's down to a couple of hundred a month.

there's also been the tax policy factor

i think that's starting to change. we're in the beginning phase of most software having to be rewritten so that agentic AI can use it alongside humans. that's a big market opportunity.

^ Yeah that's basically what I'm doing in my current role. Turn these garbage PDFs into markdown in an easily configurable way.

Speaking of Agentic AI and Bonanzas:

I'm beyond ready for AI to involuntarily end my corporate drudgery, but I don't believe the hype. This is just another tease.

^ Until you can order one I'm convinced the company is Theranos. Adcock does for Bullshit what Stonehenge does for rocks.

Found out recently the previous CTO of Figure, which worked at our local robotics lab for 20 years, lives in my town.

Or alternatively, they are going to be teleoperated by the third world, since all our household labor is being deported.

I don't have any strong opinions on Adcock in terms of personal reputation, but I do appreciate his ambition and at the least the value of his role as an industry cheerleader. and it's hard to deny that the industry is making moves. as long as we keep making progress

I just worry a Theranos blow up will suck all the air out of the space. Definitely will negatively impact real robotics research and companies if that happens.

AI RL for robotics is real

Figure might be a scam but the tech is legit

Figure definitely oversells their progress though, but they’re trying to Elon musk tactic of fundraising

^ No internet to steal all the information exists for robots. So they can't have the chatgpt moment with robots like they did with language ai. They are going to have to pay people $50-$100 an hour to pilot the robots via controls or in vr to get the data, along with ways to generate the data in video games.

Then then enough data is generated, they will use the new genius robots to skynet us all into work camps.

we're all adults here. middle aged adults. college educated adults. if we can't seriously discuss our world without instantly devolving into worst case scenario conspiracy thinking, then we deserve to get steamrolled by the Chinese in the century ahead. get a grip.

TBH, that whole thread is from the perspective of globalist humanism, so why care about China steamrolling us in the century ahead as long as they are advancing the technological frontier?

I mean, I care, but I don't have faith in my compatriots anymore, and I don't think prevailing US attitudes are a force for good anymore.

^ can you expound on that second sentence a little more for me?

As far as advancing the technological frontier goes, we should be able to steal their IP just as much as they steal ours.

^ China has been leading us in ip generation the past 3-4 years. All the top open source AI models are now Chinese, the exact opposite from 1 year ago— and they continue to release new innovations not just copying America.

BYD is building better electrical vehicles than us in terms of motors and software (build quality lags Japanese and Korean cars reportedly), China is dominating us in building green energy.

With the USA no longer being the top destination for students thanks to trump/maga this bleed will continue. Reversing this actually needs to be a top priority for the next president. This friendliness to smart immigrants is what made Apple/google/microsoft/nvidia the global powerhouses they are and this is going to fade away.

China is investing heavily in fusion energy too— if they beat us here we’re cooked.

Also China has a space station while we’re decommissioning ours. They have a mars rover, and moon lander and likely will beat us back to the moon. If they achieve these goals, African and South American countries will happily take chinas money and influence over us. Then there’s geopolitical factors that play into this— Mitch McConnell just said we’re in the most dangerous era since WWII.
