I made the loop today. Stopped by AB Surf Shop to exchange some stuff. Stopped in at Big Oak for some damn good BBQ. Went to the in laws place off Coast Guard Rd for a bit to pick some stuff up. Stopped by Capt Willis for some shrimp. Continued the trip around back to the house.

June 26th...At the Beaufort Public Access...it's the first public access east of the circle in Atlantic Beach off Beaufort Rd.

If anyone is hanging out down by the point this weekend, watch out if you are wading around the tidal pools that have cut into the beach and the little series of sand bars out there. The stingrays are out and about, my mom got stabbed by one in the ankle, and if you have not had the pleasure of stingray toxins, it is apparently a fucking terrible, terrible pain.

Teaching Moment:

• If you are ever stung by a stingray, one of the best treatments for the pain is to raise the victim's body temperature. The venom has a very low denaturing point, so if you can get them in a bathtub with water as hot as they can stand, the relief is near instantaneous. Seriously, it's magic.


• Stingray barbs are nasty as fuck. If you get stabbed, MAKE SURE you clean that wound out with the quickness. And even if you don't need medical attention, please go get some antibiotics ASAP, because 2 days later my mom had to go to the ER with a phenomenal infection.


• If you experience any chills, nausea, shortness of breath, or if the wound is above your waist around vital organs, go to the doctor. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Allergic reactions to stingray venom lead to the most deaths, as the venom usually results only in protein breakdown and incredible pain.

One can argue that swimming in the ocean is just fine as far as risk of running into a pissed off stingray. You'd probably never even make contact.

The real problem is the people who don't want to swim, but rather enjoy wading in tidal pools that form around the area. Parents feel comfortable leaving their kids in that shallow water, and people lay about and relax in it, and those areas are where you would most likely have an encounter with a stingray. I believe they are also attracted to the warmer temperatures of the water in those shallow pools during this time of year when they are getting rid of their devil's purses.
