I got a JVC 40" LCD HD TV last week from Best Buy for $1,520. It's 720p and works fine. I just got my HD DVR a couple of days ago. It is a beautiful thing (it'll be better if TWC gets ESPN2 HD, ESPNU and FSN HD).

Eh.. I think it's worth the extra $100 to get a 1080p 56" DLP HDTV....

Got it today Took a week to ship, the delivery guys said they would drop it off from 11-3, but showed up at 10:45... Which I found amazing... Setup was easy

We still just have basic cable, so no real HD channels yet... I'm going to look into an antenna for now to pic up some broadcast HD channels until we get digital cable in the next month or so.

But the xbox 360 looks amazing... After tweaking all the cables/settings to HD/1080p everything looks gorgeous... The navigation on the Samsung is VERY user friendly and intuitive. I watched The Office tonight from standard cable and it was OK... I actually prefer to stretch it to the 16:9 perspective than to have the little black bars on the sides of the screen with standard 4:3... It's not too bad, but again I definitely want to at least get HD broadcast ASAP.

So pretty much I just have the xbox 360 to really see some pretty images right now And those are only 720p for the most part... I think Virtua Tennis 3 is gonna be the first 360 game to really use 1080p...or so I heard. The difference in Fight Night Round 3 is insane... I'm noticing things I never could see on my 52" standard projection and everything is soooo fluid.

The tv is also really light... Easy to pick up and move... it's amazing. Definitely worth it (plus it's the best value out there for what it is) and I haven't even seen any HD channels yet.

I'm just excited though... so we'll see if I'm still happy with it a month from now...

^ - Congrats! I'm still enjoying my 50" Toshiba DLP I got over Thanksgiving, so I can understand the excitement. Great deal too..I paid 1k for mine (720p), so $1600 for what you got seems very reasonable.

Did you get the 5687? I thought that came w/ a built in tuner? (so even w/ basic cable you should be able to pick up all the locals in HD)?

It is that model with the built in tuner.... but watching regular cable last night (The Office/gf watched Greys Anatomy) they were most definitely not HD.

I hooked up an old antennna and I got some local channel in what looked like HD, but the reception wasn't great...we're out in Holly Springs.

I hear alot of people talking about "setting your TV to play 4:3 shows in 480i" What are they talking about and how do you do it?

I know it has to do with the stretching of the screen, but I am clueless as to how to do it on my Westy.

I ordered my free HD Box from Time Warner today.. Apparently the 5687W Samsung doesn't have the QAM tuner built in, which would give you HD definition on basic cable channels that broadcast in HD. I can still get the over-the-air channels in HD, but rabbit ears in the living room do not look great.

I just bought one of the Hannspree 32" LCD's that woot had on sale for $500. I got it in today and hooked it up to HD DVR that I got when I moved in. Currently I have it hooked up through component cables. What is the best way to calibrate an HDTV? I seems that my reds are too bright

As long has I don't dart my eyes across the screen, I don't see the RBE. Sitting a little farther away from the TV causes less darting, so that can help too.

so I'm flipping between the state game and the ohio st-Mich game. The Ohio state game is in HD on CBS. The sound is messed up. It sounds like they are echoing for some reason. You guys got any ideas or can those of you with HDTV's check?

Oh has anybody looked at the Optoma HD70 DLP projector? 720p projected to whatever size you want... Having the ability to go above 100" for under $1000 is a good deal, but I don't know if 1000 lumens will be bright enough for people who can't cover their windows. Or you could always build your own projector (several how-to guides online)

i ended up with a cheap hyundai (gasp) lcd for 800 shipped. it isnt the best looking screen ever, but it still produces a nice picture, has a nice looking case, detachable speakers, and has the hookups i needed (though only one hdmi is kinda rough).

im really quite pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone not looking to break the bank.

Stereotypically better blacks than an LCD, worse than a Plasma.

Overscans, and doesn't 1:1 pixel map 1920x1080 over VGA or HDMI.

I've been waffling about buying the 60" version for the past 3 weeks and can never talk myself into pulling the trigger. There's so much potential, but so much disappointment.

You can get a 50" Panasonic Plasma for about the same price.

I'm not a total HDTV noob, but there are certain details that I don't know.

What does this mean in regards to picture quality, usability?

It means that if you wanted to hook a computer up to the TV over VGA, you're going to get a 1366x768 box centered on the screen with a bunch of black space around it. Same thing if you hook a 360 over VGA up to it.

HDMI being overscanned means that about 2.5% of your picture won't be displayed and if you want to hook your computer up to it you'll be lowering the resolution it outputs to below 1920x1080 so that you can see things on the edge of the picture.

I guess it's not a huge deal if you don't plan on hooking up a computer to your TV or plan on using the 360 as a scaleup DVD player (since it only does that over VGA), but if you do, it's infuriating.

I'm still shopping around... since I wanted something to play Wii Tennis on (4 player action gets a little dangerous with a small screen), I was looking at Optoma HD70, 720p DLP projected to 72" for under $1k and projecting high enough to play comfortably stanidng up. Having a hard time finding furniture that would make that kind of viewing angle comfortable sitting down, since you don't buy a screen JUST for wii tennis. I got a $60 ATSC tuner already but when I stopped by AudioAdvice the other day, I fell in love with their Sony SXRD (LCoS) Display with some of the better black level, detail, and 1080 up-conversion I've seen. Plus the pixels don't have those big gaps between them that plague large LCDs. Oh yeah, and 2yr warranty, 6 month same-as-cash...

Yeah apologies for the story. Does anybody have experience with DLP projectors or SXRD TVs?

Go to a store and see if you can find last generations Panasonic Plasma (TH-50PX60U). It'll probably be about the same price and Panasonic makes better Plasmas than LG and Samsung.

Panasonic, for some reason, stuck with the same plasma panels in the new models, and LG overtook them with a better panel (deeper blacks).

Of the new LG, Samsung, and Panasonic, I would go with the LG, then the Panasonic, then the Samsung.
