Yeah, Simon transferred to State and is walking on to our team. He played at Elon.

I love our walk-ons. I'm sure walk-ons play their ass off everywhere, but you can tell ours try their best to prepare our team. I saw Larry and Simon at Sammy's a couple months ago, Simon was decked out in State gear.

was simon on scholarship. if so what's the rule on transferring from a place while on scholarship to a place where you walk on? no penalty? what if you're say a walk on on Kansas' team and then transfer to say Michigan State as a walk on? also what about going from a walk on on one team then transferring and getting a scholarship at the other school? do you have to sit out no matter what. that would suck if he only would get his senior year to be actually on the team in terms of being able to truely play in a game.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't have to sit out a year. First, I don't think Elon is division 1...but I could be wrong on that. And second, like you mentioned, he's walking on. I could be wrong again, but I think it only applies to scholarships.

And Simon is pretty good...but he's not ACC caliber. He is very athletic though and should be a GREAT practice player and defender. Glad to have him on the team. And I take that back about Elon being division 1...I think they are in our division.

Article on Lowe and his summer recruiting

Quote :
"RALEIGH - Sidney Lowe performed before his first RBC Center crowd Wednesday. No one kept score, but he did have a winning way.

In his first big public appearance since taking over as men's basketball coach at N.C. State, Lowe spoke to more than 400 people at a luncheon of the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The former Wolfpack star showed off skills that he has been honing since he was a point guard for the 1983 NCAA champions. He was relaxed, confident, enthusiastic, grateful, ambitious, generous and determined.

He also was not Herb Sendek. Lowe's earnest and reserved predecessor spent 10 years suffering gamely through public appearances and media encounters. When the spotlight falls on Lowe, he flashes a smile back.

Lowe may not restore the glory of '83 to State. He may, like Sendek, never win the ACC title. Judging by his description of the challenges ahead for the 2006-07 season -- Cedric Simmons left early and Andrew Brackman may not play basketball -- Lowe may start with a losing conference record.

But this much he has already done -- he has put a proud, happy and familiar face on State basketball. That may not be as good as a winning record, but it feels good to Wolfpack fans.

"I have not seen anyone yet who was critical of [Lowe's] selection," State's top booster, Wendell Murphy, said after Lowe's speech.

Murphy, whose solid support helped Sendek hold on despite waves of fan unrest, said, "[Lowe] said he has only one major rule and that is to have fun. I believe that is a little bit different philosophy than Herb had. I mean, Herb took everything so seriously.

"Please understand, I love Herb Sendek. I would have kept him forever, but I think the attitude is going to be a little bit different."

State athletics director Lee Fowler, who was honored by the visitors bureau Wednesday for hosting high school championships and NCAA tournaments at State, said Lowe's upbeat mood is infectious.

"He makes you smile when he talks to you," Fowler said. "His personality is happy. That's the one thing I get the most comments about."

Wearing a gray striped suit, white shirt and a silver tie, Lowe told the crowd he has maintained a home here since 1985. This job isn't just a return to his alma mater. It is a homecoming after years as an NBA player and coach.

Though he has come home, he is not home much. Lowe and his staff are roaming the country assessing high school prospects. He said he'll be in Raleigh only four days in July.

Lowe said the Wolfpack has talent returning, but the numbers are thin.

"Some of those young men who may not play too often, some of the walk-ons, they might find more time in there to help us out," he said.

The coach is trying to cut his losses by convincing Brackman, an outstanding pitcher and rising junior, that he can continue playing basketball.

"We just want to do what's best for him," Lowe said, then added to laughter, "which I think is play basketball."

Lowe enjoys meeting people, and he has found it difficult to adjust to NCAA rules that let him watch prospects but bar him from talking to them or their parents.

"That was the biggest adjustment, just not being able to be natural," Lowe said after his speech. "You see someone you know, you speak to them and you might have a conversation. You can't do that with these kids."

When he can talk to players, Lowe will be talking about the traditions of N.C. State basketball, a school that is part of small club with two national titles and can claim the player Lowe considers the best college player of all time, David Thompson.

That history "has been kind of pushed under the rug. I don't think we've done it intentionally. We just haven't thought about it," Lowe said. "You don't want to live in the past, but when you're looking at these kids, you've got to tell that story."

Lowe told the crowd that the past might overcome him when he enters his first game as State coach.

"Just make sure I don't grab the ball and start bouncing it myself as I'm having some flashback coming out of the tunnel," he said."

Gives me the impression he is leaning towards not playing basketball.

It would be best for Brack if he didn't play.

http://www.wral.com/sports/index.html

there's a vid on there right now with a snippet of an interview after Lowe's speech, and there's some footage, at the end, of our first commit Johnny Thomas.

[Edited on July 21, 2006 at 2:34 AM. Reason : Lowe]

also if you check out the WRAL Sports Update video there's a small tidbit with Lowe. he says that kids at the camps, like the Nike camp, were coming up to him and talking to him and recognized him as the new NC State coach and congratulated him, which surprised him b/c most of the time prior to this they recognized him as a NBA coach. also he said that many collegiate coaches were coming up to him congratulating him and wishing him well.

"Kentucky turns fan postings in to NCAA as violation
Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky self-reported a secondary NCAA violation because of postings on a potential recruit's MySpace.com Web site, apparently by fans.

The postings on the site of high school basketball star Patrick Patterson, of Huntington High School in West Virginia, tried to entice him to attend Kentucky, WLEX-TV in Lexington reported.

"Fans are not allowed to interact with recruitable student athletes," Kentucky athletics spokesman Scott Stricklin said Wednesday. "We had to report that to the NCAA."

Patterson was named West Virginia Player of the Year and led Huntington High to its second straight state title this year.

Stricklin said when fans contact potential recruits, the school tries to educate them not do to that or it will hurt the school.

He said if that takes care of the problem there would likely be no further action."

I am sure that there is a lot of this going on now since it is so easy to track down recruits on the internet.

The first head coach in the gym for the 2:30 games? How about new NC State head man Sidney Lowe. It is his first outing as the Pack's leader and he didn't waste any time finding a seat front and center for the afternoon games."

^those things on rivals and scout only update like once a year. i mean look at the fsu dude, fsu was low on his list. Pay attention more to what he says in interviews than anything else. if we are in the top 3, then we have a really good shot with him reguardless of what the player profile page says. also a little bad news about chris wright, he gave an interview with scout.com and it didnt even mention us except for the list of 6 schools that were still recruiting him. the article was basically about gtown. he is all but lost, but one can never give up hope. if wright goes to gtown, i think our chances at mcmillian go way up, beyond asu.

Packpride reported today that Tracy Smith, PF 2007 was being heavily recruited by Lowe. He is one of the rising prospects in the 07 Class, currently a 3 star on pp, he is sure to be in the top 100 next time the rankings update. He is also being recruited by Louisville, Florida State, Memphis, Oklahoma State, and Charlotte. Go get him sid, also a visit here is going to take place soon. The article made it sound like he was leaning to us, but he said it is still wide open.

Tracy Smith now up to 41 on rivals top 100

other recruits:
15. J.J. Hickson
43. Anthony McClain
68. Chris Wright
105. Jamelle McMillan

Wright has fell quite a bit due to injury, sure to rise back up on the next chart. Also heard he is making an official visit during the App State game.
