I’m not gonna do a rewatch of the game to really figure this out. But there was only a couple that really stick out in my mind as awful shots. I thought we didn’t settle for deep jumpers like we sometimes are content to do. I’m not saying our offense was crisp and perfect. And I’m not saying we had tons of open looks that we missed (although we had plenty). We took plenty of contested shots, but those aren’t always examples of poor shot selection. I think their D had us rushed. So we forced some shots up too soon rather than slowing down a bit. But I still don’t think the selection was truly the issue. I’ve seen several games this year where it was an issue.

What sticks out to me is multiple unforced turnovers (at least one by JJ but multiple by T and DJ), some missed shots you’d expect T and JJ to make…some in close range. And some pretty awful defense after the first 4-5 mins where i thought we came out with some solid defensive intensity.

Did any of our players step up today? I wouldn’t say anyone really had a good game. Joiner did well the first few minutes and then disappeared the rest of the game. Burns hit a few shots but seemed to struggle against their bigs. I guess what I am saying is we didn’t have any ballerz.

when he was on the floor, the offense slowed down and he was able to either back his dude down for a shot or kick it out for a good shot

Bw half time and 3rd TV timeout, morsell took two 3s and Clark took two, that's it. I don't know the distance but that's 4 and we're down 19. At least one of those 3s was a clean corner look by Morsell. One of the Clark misses was a very bad miss but looked pretty open.

Here’s where the sequence I had in mind:

Some missed jumpers and 3s happened after that. But the sequence of missed FTs, 3 bad turnovers, and multiple missed layups was kinda what did us in imo. We probably did hoist up some bad shots after that (and before then too). But that’s the sequence where it felt like the game was lost. Clemson scored 11 points in 7 mins (mostly with Hall out). It’s not like they were lighting it up. We just couldn’t do anything offensively.

I no longer remember the specific shots so maybe some of these were bad. And I agree that poor shot selection doesn’t have to be exclusive to 3 pointers. The frustrating part, I thought, was with Hall on the bench we just kept stepping on our dicks. Wild passes out of bounds. Missed 2 FTs and multiple layups. Our defense was ok for the first ~7-8 mins of the half I thought. They hit a few tough shots but they weren’t lighting up the scoreboard. Then it all fell apart.

Part of it too is this is why it's so important to finish top 4, talk all you want about sports science now vs 20-30 years ago, playing two games in two nights is still harder than playing one

Both lack many quality wins. We have just Miami and Duke, ignoring quads these are good wins no matter what. They have UVa and…us? I guess? So maybe that’s the big difference? We seem to have a better resume but it’s hard for me to see that it’s significantly better. So if they’re so firmly out, how are still firmly in?

I know other stuff is on the team sheets besides just quads but am I wrong to still feel really nervous?

wow. how to we match up sooo bad against clempson. I thought he Zone was a good idea. probably should have went to it sooner an stayed with it longer.

the Team looked either deflated or gasses. or maybe though not this again, and each player started to do hero ball and not work to get good shots (like the first 5 minutes).

Clemson’s just way more physical than us. Joiner and Smith don’t handle physical defense well. Hall stretches the floor and totally negates Burns. ACC teams are doing a better job of defending Burns too.

Some of it clearly became a mental thing with some of our unforced turnovers. Some of the open looks we had weren’t falling. Their defense extended out beyond the 3 pt line and JJ and T really couldn’t get free for many open 3 attempts. Clark had more open 3 attempts but he’s not a great shooter. And he missed a few wide open ones that their guys (Hall and Schiefflin especially) didn’t miss. For better or worse we’re a 3pt shooting team and when they aren’t falling and we aren’t getting in transition, it becomes a real slog. And we did not respond well. I thought Joiner and Smith had a few good drives into the defense but they’re just too small to finish with any frequency.

Given that it seemed like we we were more firmly in the 9/10 seed range after the VT game, this kinda confuses me. Losing (getting destroyed, even) in a game that was basically a 50/50 toss up dropped us 1 or 2 whole seed lines? The margin of defeat was awful but losing to Clemson really shouldn’t be viewed as a bad loss in any way. Did other teams (like maybe Miss St or PSU) just do so much more to climb up a seed line and drop us down? I guess that makes sense, but it would seem like 4+ teams would’ve had to jump us.

I don’t even think we should necessarily be better than an 11 seed. It just logically doesn’t make sense to me that we went from “firmly in but in the 9 or 10 seed range) to last 4 in and playing in Dayton based on conference tournaments. But maybe more bubble teams did themselves favors than I realize.
