Copeland is a walking turnover who can't shoot

Copeland averaged 4.5 assists per game to go along with the 2.8 turnovers. I'd take him in a heart beat as an upgrade to Hill for sure. He's just as good or better at getting to the rim, and is big enough to not get bullied once he gets there. He kind of reminds me of a less bouncy Darreon Seabron but Copeland is better at getting the ball to open teammates. Would you rather he could shoot the 3 even just a little? Sure, but you can't have everything.

He is decidedly not an upgrade from Hill. He is a much worse 3 point shooter who scores less, was a high turnover rate player at syracuse who somehow got worse by moving down to mcneese. Literally the only thing he does better is assists, which is offset by his 3 turnovers a game, compared to 1 for Hill. Despite being 5-6 inches taller than Hill he's a worse rebounder. Oh also he's a bad free throw shooter.

Going further, he's gotten progressively worse at turnovers in his career. His turnovers/40 have increased significantly every year from 2.8 to 3.6 to 5.1 this past season. He led his conference in turnovers with 97 (that's bad)

So yeah i dont want a guy who cant shoot AND turns the ball over a ton. We already have a guard who turns the ball over too much but he can at least shoot. Now I'm just imagining Copeland and Parker playing together and just seeing who can give the ball away fastest. Ugh.

Neither one of them has any business shooting 3's. Copeland is a big PG who can't shoot and turns it over a bit, Hill is an undersized SG who can't shoot and can't create for others. Copeland wouldn't be a bad pickup as someone to compete with Parker (or whoever) as a backup PG. No one he's bringing from McNeese is getting more than 10-15 mins a game at most, it just wouldn't hurt to have a couple of dudes already familiar with his system, especially his PG.

Bobby Hurley and Chris Corchiani were top 5 in turnovers for the ACC most years they played.

You've been listening to too many Keatts pressers. This was one of his issues. He over focused on avoiding turnovers to the detriment of actually moving the ball around and getting baskets. You can't just point at the turnovers and ignore how often the player has the ball in their hands and is responsible for creating offense. If a center that never had any assists lead the conference in turnovers, then yeah, that'd be bad. But Copeland isn't that, he has a ton of touches and creates a ton of offense.

Not saying the dude is ACC world beater level, but to dismiss him because he lead the league in turnovers and completely ignore the fact he was #3 in assists is silliness.

Alyn Breed commits!
McNeese Transfer. Formerly a Friar. Played only 2 games at McNeese due to injury. Averaged over 17ppg in those two.

Tyler Harris has a silent commitment.
Washington Huskie Transfer- 6'8" hybrid guard/wing that shot nearly 50% from 3 last year.

Quadir Copeland officially in the portal, should be following Wade to NC State, won't know about his commitment till after his visit.

He's the one I've got the most excited over so far.

Long and athletic guard hybrid who can create his own shot and hit nearly 50% of 3's (90+ attempts)

Would fill that role Scott Wood had a few years of a knock down shooter and elite defender.

Really like his potential.
Supposedly he/his people called up in the middle of the night wanting a visit and we stuck him on a plane the next day.

Best part is, he won't need a ton of NIL, gives us room for some other big names.

____

I don't mind the breed pickup if he's healthy. He's 23...mature and has a lot of turmoil that has shaped him to be a, from all accounts, good leader and teammate.

I will never ever forget Fells going up to block a dude's shot and palming it in the guys hand and taking it away.

One of the most unbelievable athletic plays i've ever seen. If he could have been any bit consistent, he would have been one of the greats.

Why would this skillset not command a high NIL price tag?

Fells had some great moments. That block vs Duke was insane. I think he had an insane shooting game vs UNC too.

PP!!11 is high on Copeland!

Quote :
"As the portal chaos carries over into April, Will Wade and NC State continue to add pieces with Quadir Copeland becoming the latest to relocate to the 919. Copeland played his Junior season at McNeese State under Will Wade where he helped lead the Cowboys to a Southland Title and Round of 32 appearance in this year's NCAA Tournament.

A bigger guard standing at 6-foot-6, 200 pounds with a well-rounded skillset and prior ACC experience from his first two years at Syracuse, Copeland is clearly excited for the challenge that playing in a major conference brings. Copeland has a great set of tools and brings a unique blend of size, athleticism, and playmaking as a bigger point guard that can be used in a variety of ways.

He's been useful for every team he's ever been on and there are a lot of different things he can do to help NC State next season as the roster continues to round into form. Copeland's experience within and beyond the ACC make him prepared while his undeniable ability make him a great piece for Will Wade and NC State as they look to execute a quick turn around in year one.

Let's take a deeper look at Copeland and what he can provide for NC State next season. We're making this one free for all Wolfpack fans to get analysis on the versatile guard.

?
Background

Copeland, who has one year of eligibility remaining originally committed to Syracuse as a member of the 2022 recruiting class. He finished his high school career at powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, played his travel ball with the New Jersey Scholars on the Nike EYBL, and finished as a three star prospect and ranked 140th nationally in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

As a Freshman at Syracuse he was used in a reserve role, appearing in 20 games but only registering 9.3 minutes per appearance. He struggled with efficiency but showed flashes as a playmaker and pesky defender over the course of his Freshman campaign.

Copeland's sophomore season is where he showed tremendous improvement in his overall game and saw his role dramatically increase as he appeared in 32 contests and registered his first career start. Copeland played 22 minutes a night and averaged 9.6 Points, 4.6 Rebounds, 2.8 Assists, along with 1.5 Steals per game. In that 23-24 season he also had a career high 25 point performance in Raleigh vs NC State that featured a lot of competitive spark.

Copeland's sophomore season showed everyone that he was a really high level player that can do a lot of different things despite being limited as a jump shooter. After the season ended Copeland made the decision to enter the transfer portal and ultimately committed to Will Wade and McNeese State.

Copeland's Junior season showed another evolution to his game where he averaged a team best and career high 4.5 assists putting him amongst the top 100 in the country. He did that while averaging 9.2 Points, 3.3 Rebounds, and shooting 48.8% from the floor in the process. He had a career high 24 starts and helped lead McNeese to their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. In McNeese's win over Clemson in the NCAA Tournament, Copeland finished with 16 Points, 7 Rebounds, and 5 Assists while shooting 5-8 from the floor.

Overall Game

Copeland has a lot of really useful tools despite him not being a threat as a jump shooter. He brings a great blend of size, athleticism, and basketball instinct that make him a productive and malleable piece all at the same time. He's got long arms and great anticipation defensively which feeds right into one of his biggest strengths as a transition scorer. I don't think NC State has had a guy this dangerous in transition since Dereon Seabron.

Standing at 6'6" he is a dynamic passer and scorer in ball screen situations, he's also not a super thin guy either, allowing him to bully smaller guards when establishing a head of steam. He's a creative and efficient finisher at the rim and his size allows him to see/pass over smaller defenders. He is capable of knocking down the occasional jumper, even from three with 16 makes on 79 attempts over the course of his career and it allows him to attack closeouts very aggressively and get to the rim where he's an elite finisher.

He's a classic case of his defensive strengths feed right into his offensive strengths with his ability to flip possessions with a steal or rebound, take it coast to coast and find a way to get a basket for himself or a teammate. There are a lot of different ways for NC State to use Copeland in their one year together.

Potential Role

As I stated in the previous commitment analysis article on Alyn Breed, there is still a lot of scholarship space (at least eight spots) for Will Wade and his staff to work with as the transfer portal is still open for more than two weeks. Copeland will be a guy NC State uses in a variety of ways, he will be a dynamic option in the half court when surrounded with a shooting heavy lineup or when he's able to be used as a mismatch against a smaller guard.

He also has a great understanding of what Will Wade expects on both ends of the floor, has a ton of ACC experience from his time at Syracuse, and can really play four different positions depending on the kind of lineup you need at the moment.

I believe all of these factors will led to Copeland playing a major role and producing in a way that is very similar to what he did in his last two season of college basketball at Syracuse and McNeese State."

Weird how they just ignored his incredibly high turnover rate.

And poor free throw shooting.

Reading this is like watching a highlight reel. Their "analysis" could make anyone look good.

Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana), Jarin Stevenson (Alabama), and Tre Holloman (Mich St.) are all visiting this weekend, those would be some good pickups. Apparently Mgbako and his family are close with AC Slater so that one is probably already a done deal.

So what are we thinking here for potential lineups

Pg holloman
Sg Mcneil
Sf arcenaux
Pf deng
C Wilkins? He shorter than Deng but seems like that type

Bench order Copeland, able, breed, Langdon

I think derrion Reid is still a possibility? But seems more likely roster gets filled out with lower level folks
