Earnhardt is an icon, like Richard Petty, and I don't think can really be compared to other drivers.

I'll second Mark Martin, Ward Burton (love the accent), and old school drivers like Harry Gant, Junior Johnson, Davey Alison, etc.

I was looking forward to Adam Petty, but I don't know if he could have saved NASCAR for me .




Oh and since no-one else has mentioned him . . . . Dave-motherfucking-Marcis. Dude was the last of the true independents and drove in wing-tip shoes. Gotta love that.

Actually I would have to give that award to Morgan Shepard who still at the age of what seems like 97 is still racing every year.
