You can spot me easily at any concert. I'll be in the front two rows wearing an orange hat.

Heres me at the Polyphonic Spree show:

I am so psyched about Okkervil River tomorrow. I believe Okkervil River, The Shins this month and then Josh Ritter at the Cradle on November 5th and Polyphonic (again) on November 13th will be my only upcoming shows.

I would love to see Spoon and New Pornographers, but, Asheville appears to be as close as they're coming. I may check out some others, but for now, those are the only ones on my calendar.

[Edited on October 1, 2007 at 5:26 PM. Reason : forgot shins... not sure how]

Great show tonight. Everyone was on point. I thought a lot of people were rude during Damien Jurado's set and I-40 was fucked between 273 and 276 on the way home but other than that it was well worth the drive.

In their defense, Damien Jurado is pretty shitty.

Nevertheless, I kept my mouth shut.

A++ secret Shearwater concert would see again.

Wow, I have lost the little respect for this place I had left. People just can't sit still and appreciate a singer/songwriter anymore.

And for the record he didn't seem enthusiastic because people were chattering on while he was playing, disrespecting him and his music, I don't blame him.

You people should be ashamed and have you ability to make judgment calls about music stripped from you. Peace.

Okkervil River was awesome. John got his paper plate setlist with autographs and even told Will about his fly being undone right before the encore was starting. This was my favorite live performance of the year probably.

Damien Jurado bored more throughout much of his set although I'm not into someone up on stage by themselves with just an acoustic guitar. He had some really bad sailer tattoos too.

^ agreed--- probably my favorite show this year, although Midlake still makes a good push for the top spot.

Also agreed on Jurado... what a horrible opener. He practically lulled the crowd to sleep before Okkervil River could take the stage.

It was almost as bad as when the Papercuts opened for Grizzly Bear.

Also, as I requested in the Okkervil River thread, if anyone would be so kind as to post the setlist, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks.

Man you guys make me sad...just pitiful the lack of willingness to listen and understand.

I found this review of another show with Juado, a good synopsis of what was going on at the show.

Quote :
"Damien Jurado, looking up from a set too subtle for the space, at one point comments, “You’ll like Okkervil River. They all wear suits and jump around a lot… and they’re handsome guys.” Everything I’m not, he might as well say, and however much I love Jurado, you can’t help noticing the contrast. Okkervil River puts on a party, not a sensitivity-raising session, with homespun leaps off drum stands and acoustic Townsend windmills and handclaps and indiscriminant use of tambourine.

Jurado is next, a craggy hulk of a man stooped over acoustic guitar. He looks like a teamster, a skull and cross bonds tattoo on one muscular arm, his hair cut short, his cheekbones squared and stolid, as if they’d been chipped from granite. His songs, too, describe a world of hard-bitten, tongue-tied people, stunned by love and loss and abuse into silence. His melodies are simple, adorned by two-fingered picking and breezy rhythmic chords, the bare minimum required to set his stories to music. And yet, though the songs nearly define terms like “sparse” and “reticent,” they are unexpectedly powerful, at least to the people in the audience who are willing to listen. (There’s a lot of chatter and going for drinks during his set.) A new song, off the tour-only EP, feels like the most traditional sort of courting tune, full of whispered desire and hushed expectation, until it takes a sharp turn towards darkness with the lyric, “Can you still kiss me with a broken jaw?” At one point, in a louder, more strident, guitar slapping, hard-strumming finale, Jurado slips in the observation that “No one sees the tragedy but me,” and that, in a sentence, is what his songs do: find the heartbreak hidden behind facades of country stoicism. He closes with the lovely title track from his last album, Now I’m in Your Shadow, high wordless crooning reaching upwards to the rafters, sad in a way that nonverbal singing can be… because it’s not tied to any personal narrative.

so your saying I'm not listening and I can't understand and appreciate his type of music? That's just ludicrous. I don't find him interesting. His lyrics don't appeal to me. His repetitious chords don't inspire me. I stood in the front row and listened to his music and didn't care for it. Most opening acts get a lot of chatter during their performances anyways. I'm sure people were chatting when Radiohead was opening up for Alanis Morissette. That's one of the aspects of live performances (musicians and comedians mostly) you got to play through.

^^good call on the Papercuts. Before the first song was over I was ready to for them to get off the stage.

I stand by my statement. You say he is boring and uninspiring. Anyone standing in the building couldn't help but hear and be bored, but hearing and listening are two different beasts.

All this being said I don't really want to single any one person out. It was just the general attitude of the crowd towards his set. Very rude IMO. That dude deserves much more respect for grinding out music with excellent consistency for over 10 years. Just sayin.

haha, yep--- they looked and acted as if they didn't want to be there. Like a bunch of zombies on stage just going through the motions.

They're opening for a band that had an album on virtually everyone's "best of the year" list, the opportunity for them to create a buzz about themselves as they opened for sold out shows and they go out and shit the bed like that? Terrible.

I can't help but think about the comments of Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwell's on the changing attitude of people that attend shows.

also,

Quote :
"Yup. in my ever increasing neurotic state, i wish to prove that i am a busy beaver, and even if most else in my life seems like a "failure", I can at least point to a shitload of work i do. I am a busy, busy fellow. I really am. Some folks are busy at the garage, some at thier stock market job. me, I am busy in my studio. this was tonight's effort, an envelope for the increadible musician, Mr. Damien Jurado.

Dear stuck flex,

No one liked Damien Jurardo. Give up. Your opinion isn't the right one, and obviously you are in the minority. The majority here thinks his lyrics were mediocre and his chords droning. Move on.
