Why wouldn't McDaniel want to be Wally Pipp?

[Edited on February 8, 2018 at 8:52 PM. Reason : maybe the opposite of Wally Pipp]

Yeah

But basically, you don't want to be the guy to immediately follow Belichick, Coach K, etc, you want to be the guy that follows THAT guy

unless you’re great and have been told you’ll have an active mentor

we don’t know if he’s great, but if he is, it won’t matter who he’s following

There's still much, much less pressure when you're not immediately following an all-time great

Oh right, Case Keenum has proven to be a quality NFL starter year in and year out.

Still trying to figure out why Jerrick McKinnon is now one of the 5 highest paid RBs in the NFL.

I'd be interested to see the graph for ratio of team salary dedicated toward RBs vs. wins. I feel like one of the key things better NFL GM's or people running the teams understand is that you don't spend on RBs and they are easy to find in the draft. Maybe I'm totally off and would be no correlation there but just seems like a position you shouldn't spend anything significant on or if you do spend it on several backs that are good situationally not one back that takes up a lot of money, can't play 3rd down, and then gets hurt anyway.

Seems to be 2 train of thoughts on RBs.

You either have a great one or you devote multiple roster spots to guys with different skillsets to make up for the one. Then you try to maximize the efficiency in those multiple guys by making sure at least 1 of them are still on rookie deals.

The Pats and Eagles were stock full of guys on rookie deals, and this was the spending last year at RB:

Patriots: Total of $7.1m against the cap last year.
Eagles: Total of $7.5m against the cap last year.
Steelers: Total of $12.9m against the cap last year.

It's going to be really interesting to see what happens in the new few years as all of these great young RBs on rookie deals come up for their 2nd contract(Gurley, DJ, Zeke).

You're right that's when things get more interesting. To re-sign both Zeke and Dak is going to a massive cap hit with the Cowboys for example. You've got a short window when you hit a homerun draft pick to capitalize before their second contract. The Rams are going to have that same problem with Gurley and Goff

Just look at Seattle and how that window opened when Wilson was drafted, but pretty much began closing before the ink was dry on his contract extension that took him from like 600k to 22 million a year. It's designed so you can't actually afford everyone.

Well, the massive cap hit will be spread out because Elliot (as a first round pick) will have his team option for a 5th year picked up. Prescott's contract will be up a year earlier. But it will all be moot if Elliot keeps acting like an idiot.

Problem will be that the Cowboys are going to have cap issues before either contract pops up. That #1 OL they have is about to get really, really expensive.

Zack Martin is going to be the highest paid OG in the league.
Smith is already locked into a monster contract.
Frederick is already locked into a monster contract.
Collins is going to be due for a new contract after 2019.
Cooper/Green, their other guards, are both FAs.

They're going to be paying one of the most expensive LT's, C's, and G's in football, then trying to keep together the other G and RT spot. Then you have to try and pay Dak and Zeke, on top of trying to not completely lose all of your defensive stars like Lawrence who you can only franchise so long.

I know everyone wants to be the team that is filled with all pro players on rookie contracts, but that model really only gives you a 1-3 year period to win before you start losing those guys and/or having to hope you hit on draft picks again.
