slate is reporting that the church building has no showers and no kitchen, and the building flooded during a tropical storm in 2001. sounds like a perfect shelter site.

from anything i saw, the church itself was not flooded, nor was general access to the church.

However I agree that the media response is a little overblown and that building isnt a great spot to house lots of people for this kind of scenario. He's still a clown and an ass and he shouldnt have lied about why they didn't have the church open etc. I expect nothing less of him and he should get called out on his blatant lying but there are more important issues regarding the situation here in Texas right now.

This guy was being made fun of by the media far before this thing ever happened.

On the flipside, I'm seeing a lot of good coverage for the furniture store owner that opened his doors to some 400 people. He's letting them sleep on his for-sale furniture in whatever condition they came in. He's invited pets. He's giving them food. Certainly a role model that Mr. Osteen could take lessons from. Sure that guy will have all of his ruined furniture covered by insurance, but any financial losses from his goodwill will be more than covered by the patronage he'll receive once this is all over.

The same won't be said for Joel Osteen.

I just don't understand motivations of people like him in our always-on society. Did he not know that he'd get raked over the coals for keeping his doors shut? For sure letting that many random people in would wreck his church, but again, insurance would cover his losses. Does he not understand the level of positive feedback he would have received had he welcomed victims with open arms?
