the level and scope of the class?
I'm in CHEM 174 The Food of Chemistry at UNCA and not only is it a typical chemistry class with a proper lab but it has NUMEROUS outside of class projects
right now we have two out of class GROUP projects... so I have two different groups working on two different projects simultaneously for the same class
one of the projects is to develop a presentation for a nutrition class that we're working with on our lab results regarding the healthfulness of food on campus
the other project is to create a video about the chemical processes involved in some form of food production 11/6/2007 9:01:20 AM |

and some, buddy!
I've also had a group project (the members were primarily people from other classes in my "cluster" of classes) that involved catering a meal at a dinner about sustainability that was judged - my group won
and typically in this class we've got more than one assignment due on any given day late work gets 50% off 11/6/2007 9:05:09 AM |

watch 'Good Eats' on Food Network. Just about every episode goes into the chemical processes involved in making food (i.e. cookies, bread, things like that).11/6/2007 9:07:43 AM |

I'm doing a video on beer because I know homebrewers and some professionals getting a tour of a professional brewery
^^ the point wasn't that it was at UNCA it was that it was a 100 level course

E497B... I think it only counts as three hours
I think our final group paper will end up being at least 200 pages, single spaced

in addition to all of the chemistry nonsense we are also reading a novel that we occasionally are asked to write papers on
but we have so many assignments and the dates of the assignments often change with minimal warning that it is impossible to keep track of it
lots of folks in that class bring in an assignment, turn it in and then realize that ANOTHER assignment was due that day
lots of surprised "GOD DAMNIT!"s and "MOTHERFUCK!" 11/6/2007 9:32:01 AM |

I'm in ADN 111 (Intro to 2D design for non-majors).. and I do more work for that single class than all my other classes combined this semester. I've also been required to spend $100+ easily on supplies that I'll not be able to sell back.
Shoulda taken another arts class 11/6/2007 9:41:47 AM |

CH230, it's the computer option for chemistry majors. unnecessarily hard for a 1 credit hour course meant to fulfill a computer requirement.
i wish i had taken E115. 11/6/2007 9:48:01 AM |

i've had some classes that were like that- like my journalism my last semester- we had 2-5 articles/projects due everyweek- it was a 100 level class
although, i might be a bit biased being a science major 11/6/2007 11:21:29 AM |

well if the class was a writing class and had regular writing assignments I suppose that makes sense
but I've already catered a meal and now I have to produce a video for this CHEMISTRY class

I do appreciate it
it is interesting, I'm learning a lot and it can be lots of fun
HOWEVER, I have 3 other classes that also require a fair bit from me shit is getting tiring 11/6/2007 11:36:13 AM |

If 225g of liquid water at 100C is added to a 150g ceramic coffee cup at room temperature (25C) What temperature will the water be after reaching thermal equilibrium with the coffee cup?
The heat capacity of water is 4.184 J/gC and the heat capacity of the ceramic is 1.381 J/gC. 11/6/2007 11:39:04 AM |
StillFuchsia All American 18941 Posts user info edit post |
Q=(mass)(heat capacity)(temp difference)
and Q(lost) = Q(gained)
so,
(225)(4.184)(100-T)=-(150)(1.381)(T-25)
[Edited on November 6, 2007 at 11:41 AM. Reason : unless you're worrying about conduction, convection and other fun differentials] 11/6/2007 11:41:03 AM |

thanks! I figured it was something like that
How about this one?
How much heat is required to convert a 25g ice cube at -20C to steam at 150C? 11/6/2007 12:02:23 PM |
hondaguy All American 6409 Posts user info edit post |
the heat required to raise the temp from -20 to 0 + the heat required to melt the ice to water + the heat required to raise the temp from 0 to 100 + the heat required to vaporize the water + the heat required to raise the temp from 100 to 150
keep in mind that the specific heat will be different for the ice, liquid water, and steam

from what I have seen, this would apply to most engineering labs
I know for all 3 ME labs, it is 1 credit hour. You end up spending anywhere from 1 to 3 hours in lab every week, have to take another hour every week watching a video and taking a prelab quiz and then another 3 to 6 hours a week writing a lab report.11/6/2007 1:10:50 PM |

Architecture Design Studio...since I've been in school - every semester. 12 hours a week of class time for 6 credits and you are expected to have edited everything and more that the professor told you about in the previous class
Example: A week before the final review on a project, my professor told me that my building looked much better when it was upside down. So I had to rework all the floors/sections/elevations, rebuild the model (3D on the computer and physically) among other things all in a week.
I typically get home between 2-4am. Sleep a few hours and start it over again the next day.
So, if I sleep 1/2 as much as everyone else, does that mean I'm going to live 1/2 as long?? 11/6/2007 1:14:44 PM |

Distribute: it helps.
(225)(4.184)(100-T)=(150)(1.381)(T-25)
(225)(4.184)(100)-(225)(4.184)T=(150)(1.381)T-(150)(1.381)(25)
94140 - 941.4T = 207.15T - 5178.75
-1148.55T = -99 318.75
T = 86.4731618
