50 days until we run out of the tunnel into the warm, humid, summer air of Bank of America stadium.

50 days until I emerge in section 551 with two delicious ice cold beers.

i have goosebumps already.

Via ESPN Insider

Quote :
"NFC's most overrated players

Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers

Newton's backers would defend his Pro Bowl nomination last year by quoting that Newton set a single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (14) and became the first player to pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 500 yards in a season.

Those are impressive marks on their face but they are quantity-based and occurred after a lockout-truncated offseason. As I mentioned in my fantasy football draft guide, the lockout hurt defenses' ability to practice blitzes, which was a primary factor in why passing offenses were so explosive early on.

This impacted Newton as much as anyone, as he threw for 374 or more yards in three of his first four games. Once defenses started to get up to speed, however, Newton wasn't close to as effective a passer, throwing for 208 or fewer yards in five of his last six games.

These defensive adjustments are a main reason why Newton came up short in the areas of vertical yards per attempt (10.5, tied for 21st) and stretch vertical yards per attempt (12.6, tied for 17th). (Note: vertical passes are aerials thrown 11 or more yards downfield; stretch vertical passes are thrown 20 or more yards)

Newton also came up well short in ESPN's Total QBR metric (56.6, ranked 16th) and he posted a 4.2 percent bad decision rate (BDR) that was the fifth-highest mark in that category last season. (Note: BDR measures how often a quarterback makes a mental error that leads either to a turnover or a near-turnover such as a dropped interception)

There is little doubt Newton's incredible drive will, when combined with his talent, make him a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback in the future, but he isn't quite there yet.

"

Yes, let's call a rookie that didn't suck his first year overrated. I guess that Peyton Manning fellow on a 3-13 team in 1998 was overrated too.

Not only is QBR a joke, this argument is:

Newton also went 4-2 in his last 6 games. What a fucking retard.

i'd say a rookie qb would be affected by the lockout more than anybody, actually..

he is probably overrated, since everybody plays fantasy and just cares about numbers, but if he cuts down in INTs he'll be damn good

yeah, people overblow the lockout shit. i mean the guy had hardly any time to learn his offense. AND HE IS DUMB, TOO! obviously the guy is insanely talented.

Quote :
" In 1995, when linebacker Kevin Greene was a Pittsburgh Steeler (Scott’s note: this was before he became a Carolina Panther), he was stopped by a youngster seeking his autograph on a football after a preseason session at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. Greene took the football and, in a variation of the little-used quick kick, punted it over a hill. The kid brought the ball back, and Greene promptly punted it away again. The father of one of the kid's friends complained in a letter to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Greene was ripped by fans. He explained his actions by saying that the kid should have been more respectful, asking for an autograph instead of demanding it. Greene may have been correct, but two punts on the same set of downs seems a little extreme."

Pretty good news here guys
Quote :
"
2012 Mean Projection: 8.4 wins
On the Clock (0-4): 6%
Mediocrity (5-7): 28%
Playoff Contender (8-10): 48%
Super Bowl Contender (11+): 18%
Postseason Odds: 38.9%
Projected Average Opponent: 2.3% (10th)

"

And a few interesting facts from last year
Quote :
"
The Panthers were one of only three teams with a right-handed quarterback who threw more passes to the left side than to the right side of the field. The others were New England and Oakland. Cam Newton threw only two of his 17 interceptions on the right side of the field. The Panthers led the league with 7.2 yards per carry and 58.4% DVOA on designed runs on second-and-long (i.e., not scrambles). Yet they only ran 25 percent of the time in these situations. The Panthers also led the league with 6.4 yards per carry and 51.8% DVOA running from formations with three or four wide receivers. Overall, they had a better running game with a single back then they did with two or more backs, a big change from 2009-10 when they were a much better running team with multiple backs. However, the Panthers had a league-low -48.5% DVOA when they went empty backfield. Although the Panthers were the worst defense in the league by DVOA, they actually ranked 11th in the first quarter of games. Carolina gave up a league-high 9.7 average yards and 70.9% DVOA to running back screens. The Panthers were absolutely killed when they big-blitzed in 2011, allowing an astonishing 12.2 yards per play. That was three yards more than any other defense and almost five yards more than what the Panthers allowed otherwise. Carolina benefited from a league-low 15 dropped passes, just 3.1 percent of opposing passes. Panthers opponents threw a league-high 23 percent of passes to running backs."
