So the spoonflower fabric worked out great! It wasn't quite exactly what I imagined, so I tinted it with some Rit dye to get it just right.

It's for a Melisandre costume from Game of Thrones. She wears this dress briefly in the second episode of the second season. Progress pics are at chancecrafts.tumblr.com ! I <3 wrap dresses so much.

I love that dress!!

How many yards of fabric do you figure is needed for curtains that will hang in a door frame? I'm planning to take out the closet doors in the room we're turning into a nursery and figure I'll use curtains to conceal the closet. I've seen some fabric I like at Spoonfabric put it's pretty pricey so I don't know if I want to splurge if I'll need lots of it.

In my experience, about 2.5 yards of fabric per panel. So if you want 2 panels that's 5yds

I've had good experiences with fabric.com & they run sales all the time

Yeah $90 is a bit steep for curtains I should email them and see if they have like a bargain bin at their warehouse or something. Or I wonder if they donate mess ups to the Scrap Exchange.

Have started my first quilt. So far it's not as bad as I was expecting.

I didn't find quilting hard at all

The worst part is the end when you put all 3 pieces together... That shit blows

But there are a ton of modern cheats & shortcuts now.

I think I might try making this after I get done with my quilt:

Looks like a pretty easy sling. I might even splurge and get some Spoonflower fabric for it so I finally have an excuse to order something from there haha.

I just finished my first big hand sewing project- a pair of blue elbow length gloves! I needed a suede material to match shoes I have for a costume and couldn't find them anywhere... so I made a pair.

I've been wanting to try gloves and sewing with leather but both seem too hard. go you!

Nice! Will you post a photo of the gloves with your costume?

I just finished an A-line knee length dress made with Tanzanian batik fabric. I'll probably add a zipper because
it's a little tight in the shoulders and a total bitch to get off.

^^ They were faux stretch suede, so it wasn't too hard, just time consuming. I used a pair I found at a vintage shop for three bucks as a pattern. You should give it a shot!

^ The picture I uploaded is too big to post here, but I've got the (mostly) finished costume at http://chancecrafts.tumblr.com

Does anyone have a machine that can do custom embroidery? I need something simple for my Halloween costume- the art is already vectorized.

If no one here does, I'm pretty sure that sewing shop on Duraleigh Road has one you can use on-site. I have no idea what they charge for the service though.

^ Good tip! I'm in Greensboro... I wonder if there is anything like that in this part of town. I ended up downloading some software and found someone on another forum to stitch it out for me.

I've got a sewing heavy Halloween.... Anyone else working on costumes?

I'm just going to be at home passing out candy so I doubt I'll spend the time sewing a costume. But I've been making lots of baby stuff! Baby stuff is great because you can usually finish it in an hour, which is about my attention span for sewing

Most places that sell home embroidery machines will be willing to show off the machines capabilities if you act interested enough in buying one.

lol I just remembered this weekend my mom was saying she has an electronic embroidery machine new in box she has never opened. She was asking me if I want it but I don't know if I'd ever use it. She should probably just sell the thing for cheap to get it out of her storage closet!

uh, so the girlfriend's birthday is coming up soon, and id like to know what the best new sewing machine under $200 would be?

she is very craft, and will be a beginner, but i dont want her to outgrow it in less than a year.

i suppose i could spend a little more if there was some fantastic leap in quality, so just let me know.

Brother and Singer are the best brands out there. I have an antique Singer from 1927 that still runs like a charm. Plus its pretty easy to find replacement parts as needles do break! You can find reasonable ones on Amazon for under $100.

I disagree about getting a Brother or Singer. While they used to make quality machines, the ones they make now that under $200 are pretty low quality. The people that I know that like there’s they have had for a long while like the user above. In my experience, the newer ones break really easily.

4 years ago when I went to purchase a new machine, my budget was similar to yours and I was tired of buying a new machine every 2 years because of them breaking. I went to a Pfaff dealership and got the Hobby 1122. Knowing how I sew, I wanted a machine that could run a basic single stitch very well, make a buttonhole and really needed it to do nothing else. I also did not want a machine with a computer built in it. This fit the bill. I have been very pleased with my purchase ever since then and have had no issues. (If you think she will want more stitches available the 1132 and 1142 include more.)

I did have to laugh recently- I took a quilting class at a Bernina dealership (which I believe the cheapest machine they had in the store was 1.5K) and several complemente my machine on how well it stitched. I must admit though, I was drooling over the machines they had in store!

If you're trying to sew leather, go by tandy and get some glover's needles. they have a triangle type sharp point that will punch through better than a sewing needle, and won't leave a large hole. I use them for sewing buckskin.
