when you guys make vinegar salads...or maybe i'm the only one that does this....what vinegar do you use?

you know, a cucumber + onion + tomato (or whatever veggie) salad?

balsamic is good, but sometimes i like just vinegar + dill + ground pepper. i can't remember. red wine? white wine? apple cider? i'm guessing malt is off the list.

i think it is red. or maybe white. red smells the most normal.

what would YOU use?

fuck that. I've gone through the cycle:

having a bitch cook for me

being poor and having to cook

cooking because I like cooking

and now I alternate between cooking and going out when I feel lazy. today was a going out day.... and my tech. lead took me out to dinner for something or other that I did at work.

I've always used apple cider vinegar for cucumber salad. Rice vinegar if I'm feeling Asian.

^^^Yeah cleaning up is seriously not that bad.

1) Cook shit
2) load your plates
3) Put any extra in tupperware
4) RINSE POTS/PANS/UTENSILS (takes 30 seconds esp if the pans/pots are still hot) NEVER SCRUB ANYTHING
5) eat

i'm not cooking for 8 people like some of you fat people who have kids, but i don't think it really requires that much cleaning if you use this method. Plus after your lazy ass has gotten off the couch and you are full of food you don't get that "oh fuck look at all this shit" sensation. RINSE YOUR PLATES AFTER YOU EAT THEM. IF YOU SIT THEM IN THE SINK YOU HAVE TO SCRUB THAT SHIT. how do people not know this? My roommates bitch at me for not doing the dishes, then i point out that none of my shit is in the sink, and i cleaned up all their pots/pans they used to cook

I also clean up while I'm cooking. I'll put stuff away, wipe up crumbs, etc. That way the mess at the end isn't so bad.

Cooking is NOT that hard! Fresh food is NOT that expensive! And the food you make WILL be better than a frozen pizza. Of course it takes practice and everybody messes up sometimes, you just have to stick with it.

in general i will cook as long as i dont have to clean. my cooking is pro, the commitment to effort is lacking and severely hampered by lil caesars down the street always callin me about a hot and ready.

I think I'm more likely to cook if people are coming over to eat. 1) Like smoothcrim said, it can often be easier cost/effort -wise to just buy something 2) If I have folks over, they bring something, and I get a lot for making a little.

Also, my shrimp and grits leftovers were delicious as lunch today

last night butterflied two pork tenderloins, which i soaked in a brine first

stuffed them with a sauteed mixture of spinach, garlic, and shallots

lined with fontina cheese

i used to think like this but after learning how to shop better and planning ahead, i don't agree with this statement anymore

unless you're eating like, fast food 99 cent menu, i guess. but who wants to eat that shit all the time? otherwise you can make good, delicious, healthy meals for cheap. yes, when you go to the grocery store and buy a bag of chicken breasts you are like wow, this is $10 (and usually you can do buy one get one on those frozen ones OR even the butcher area ones and then package/freeze them yourself) and i could have gotten a quarter pounder meal for $5....but the chicken lasts what....8 - 10 meals??

i think it is really only more convenient to just go out and buy something, not cheaper. especially with meal planning, coupons, and sales.

p.s. sites like cooking light can help you with delicious meal ideas and menu planning. on sat/sunday plan some meals for the week...make a budget...it really isn't that hard. it takes some effort, that is it though.

just made and had dinner:

2 steaks (total 10 oz)
fresh rocket
labneh
sauteed browned garlic shrimps
sauteed veggies (eggplant, courgette, cherry tomatoes)
large mandarin

i am on paleo... it is great! annoying this is you have to cook a lot.

p.s. food was cooked with about 5 tbsp of added fat

We hosted a cajun/creole dinner party this weekend. My girl and I made shrimp and grits, turtle cookies, and beignets with chocolate dipping sauce. My friends made catfish gumbo, creole cornbread, and sauteed swiss chard. Great stuff.

Well, the way I see it. Is less that it's outright cheaper and more that between a decently low price and the lack of effort required it's worth it. Adding a salad to a $3.99 HT rotisserie chicken or a $5.00 Lil' Caesar's hot n' ready is worthwhile for me.

We make an effort to eat 90% of meals in, planning by the week for breakfast, lunch, and dinnner. It's a lot of fun navigating sales, coupons, seasonal produce, and the like, but it also makes us appreciate going out that much more when we get to.

^i agree. The less you go out to eat, the more you appreciate being served food that you didn't prepare. I've also noticed that, ever since cooking at home for most our meals, I tend to order more interesting meals when I'm out rather than the same old choices.

Yesterday I made yummy Sunday gravy that we ate with chicken parmigiana and spaghetti!

I want to make my own cupcake recipe

Right now my flavor ideas are:

Lemon and lime cupcakes (using lemon and lime zest, with a touch of vanilla flavor) with raspberry icing (made with real raspberries), topped with lemon and lime zest

OR

Lemon and raspberry cupcakes (made with lemon zest and real raspberries), with vanilla and lime frosting (vanilla extract with lime zest)

yeah lemon and raspberry is probably my favorite flavor

I'm also planning on making a lemon cupcake with simple raspberry frosting... then cutting up a marshmallow, arranging it like a flower on top, and placing a whole raspberry in the center

hahaha of course I share, I'd be a house otherwise... I always keep one or two for myself though

usually I bring them to class, or give them to my group of friends... if not everyone eats one in class, I bring them to the genetics clinic and leave them out

one of the doctors said when I'm in their clinic for our rotations, I will have an assignment to make a snack each week



I love cupcakes

and for real, the main reason I make them so much is to see people enjoy them

ps, I made these this week... cookies and cream cupcakes (with real oreo chunks in the batter)

They were super yummy the edges were slightly crispy but everything inside was soft (recipe calls for it that way)... you crush the Oreo so it blends in nicely.. not too crunchy but not too soft
