With even a fairly lightweight case, the iPad can handle a fall from 100,000 feet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4xNcF6T7Is

If you think that UI sucks, look at Windows 7. It's a zero-knob UI. There are literally no wheels I can turn to move my windows. WTF, Microsoft?

.Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s next iPad, expected to go on sale in March, will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product.

The company’s manufacturing partners in Asia started ramping up production of the iPad 3 this month and plan to reach full volumes by February, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public. The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, two of the people said.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is counting on the new model to ward off mounting competition in a market that Apple pioneered two years ago. After its debut in 2010, the iPad emerged as the company’s second-biggest source of revenue -- after the iPhone -- and inspired rival products from Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads, generating at least $25.3 billion in sales.

Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, said the company doesn’t comment on rumor and speculation.

The Cupertino, California-based company has been working on making the iPad compatible with a wireless standard called long- term evolution, or LTE, said one of the people. Carriers such as Verizon Wireless (VZ) and ATT Inc. (T) are rolling out LTE networks to give users faster access to data.

LTE Networks
Smartphone makers, including Samsung, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) and Nokia Oyj (NOKIA), have already introduced smartphones that work on the faster networks. Apple is bringing LTE to the iPad before the iPhone because the tablet has a bigger battery and can better support the power requirements of the newer technology, said one of the people.

The new display is capable of greater resolution than the current iPad, with more pixels on its screen than some high- definition televisions, the person said. The pixels are small enough to make the images look like printed material, according to the person. Videos begin playing almost instantly because of the additional graphics processing, the person said.

The new iPad is being assembled by Apple’s main manufacturing partner, Foxconn Technology Group. Like most technology companies, Apple contracts with companies in Asia for labor to assemble its devices. Foxconn, which also builds the iPhone and other Apple products, gets about 22 percent of its sales from Apple, according to supply-chain data compiled by Bloomberg.

Boosting Production
Mass production began at the start of this month, with factories running 24 hours a day in China, one of the people said. Manufacturing will halt over China’s Lunar New Year holiday this month and then ramp back up to a peak in February, the person said.

The introduction of the new iPad will be Apple’s first major hardware release since the death of company co-founder Steve Jobs in October. The company is hosting an education event focused on electronic textbooks next week that won’t include any hardware introductions, said a person familiar with the matter.

Apple, the world’s largest technology company by market value, was little changed today in U.S. trading at $419.81. The stock rose 26 percent in 2011, marking its third straight year of gains.

For the record, I was making fun of the extremely underwhelming iPad 1 that lacked so many features--including a camera!

The iPad 2 is a much nicer piece of gear, and the iPad 3 should improve on it. Despite the fact that they still don't have Flash support (which is the biggest joke), I think it's not the joke that the first iPad was. I'm glad my Touchpad (webOS & Android compatible) has Flash support.

Further, yeah, I was wrong about people enjoying these things ... I even found since then that I enjoy tablets for a limited use. But that first iPad sucked hard.

I've used flash on a TouchPad. And that alone is the convincing I needed to be 100% sure that Apple made the right call in not supporting it on the iPad.

Also, do people actually use the camera on their iPad2? I know it's been a year since the 2 came out and I'm still plenty happy with my regular old iPad. Not one time in that year have I even remotely wished that it had a camera, front or rear facing.

Flash support on mobile devices is complete shit. And the fact that Apple didn't have it from the beginning forced most sites to come up with what ended up being superior alternatives. It's to to point now to where it's not something that you miss, and anyone that uses the old "the iPad doesn't support Flash" argument are just grasping at meaningless straws. Might as well point out how the iPhone doesn't have support for copy and paste too. What's that? They added that one already? Shit, lemme cross that one off the list.

TL;DR: the iPad is better off without Flash.

i definitely agree a product with as much marketshare as the ipad is going to dictate how people develop mobile sites, avoiding .flv videos, etc

but the flash-based websites i've visited on my touchpad in both webos and android boots didnt give me any problems at all...and while setting up someones ipad2 a couple months ago i did find some sites that were basically inaccessible because of no flash support...but i also heard there is some kind of workaround/mod/jailbreak/something

i'm not here to bash the ipad2, its a lot more responsive than my touchpad, but i also dont know why they wouldnt have it by now

See, it's not a "by now" issue. It's not something they are waiting to implement. If it was important, they would have found a way to put it in. As arrogant as it may be, they decided that they didn't need flash, and that's the end of the issue for them. Not to keep going back to the old, copy and paste argument, but this isn't like that where they are just waiting until they can get it right. It simply isn't happening at all (I suppose there's a slight chance I could be eating those words in a month or so when quad core iPad3s come out, but even then, I highly doubt it)

Yes, there are jailbreak hacks and third party browsers that allow for Flash support. And they work just as well as native support for the Touchpad, which is to say they're complete shit. Yes, some sites work well enough, but it's still not nearly as nice as content that was actually designed to work properly on a mobile device from the start instead of something that was hacked together to get the job done.

i think some people just want to be able to get the exact same experience of a website that they visit from their computer when they visit it on their mobile device...i hate when i'm in the android boot on my touchpad and visit a website and they default to their m.website.com since they detect android, even though the full website works fine if i manually paste a link

its not the biggest gripe, but to me the more compatibility, the better

some apps are great for specific purposes, others are oversimplified and cut out some features of regular PC/Mac browsing

Well of course they do. But some half-baked implementation of Flash doesn't deliver a desktop experience no matter what tablet you're on.

what kind of websites were you loading to say the flash support on the touchpad is half baked complete shit?

i've had my touchpad a few months and my only issue with web browsing was a refresh issue on TWW, but i believe an OS upgrade fixed that

honestly though i'd love an example of a website that uses flash that is really shitty on the tablet, so i can try and pull it up myself and see what you mean

Dude its money to be made for not having full on flash on the iPad or iPod, why the hell would Apple let you play flash games for free when you can pay to play them?? Why the hell would Apple let you watch video streaming like justin.tv when they knwo you will pay for an App to use the website?? Yeah, full on flash when you can buy and App or get a free one and be spammed to death?? Come on man lets get back to dicussing the practical and REAL reason why there is no Flash on Apple.

The stock Webos browser is useless for typing posts on tww. Once you get past one line, it's a crap shoot to navigate the text (stock Android browser on bionic had the samve problem). And it will often do this weird thing where it auto corrects after each letter.

Regarding mobile flash, basically any stream on lshunter is impossible to use because you can't dismiss the ads.

honestly some of those are legit. a few are making it sound worse than it is.

The first one sounds good. And while I wish there were some other option, simply clicking the video to pause it(which will then bring up all the other autohide stuff) is not that hard. That was probably the first problem I noticed. But no big deal.

Games I steer with a mouse totally does not apply to me. I'd think you could just plug in the bluetooth mouse though.

Menus that popup sublinks is probably the best on the list. I do find that problem from time to time. Again though, not too bad, just click the first one, which will pull up a page with all the sublinks(typically) and go from there. Maybe 5-10 extra seconds.

Mouseover summaries are not that common in my opinion. Sure it might suck not having it, but I can't remember the last website I went to that required hovering the mouse over something to get a summary on it.

anyone replaced an ipad2 Digitizer(ie screen)? Recommendations?

My 2 year old got a chair, moved it to the bar, climbed up onto said bar, grabbed the ipad where it lay, and then decided to go apeshit and toss it down on the ground in anger when she could not get past my screen password.

It haunts me with slow mo instant replay in my head ...

Thinking about using ScreenTek ... either buying the digitizer and replacing it myself ... or sending it in.

Just wondering how flimsy these parts are and if its worth the extra money to send it in.

Shipped/packed/fixed/returned for $140 ... Digitizer shipped to me for $58

I replaced the one on my iPad 1, and I don't recommend doing it yourself.

Long story short, I ended up selling it as broken on ebay for almost $300, and it was the shitty 16GB wifi version.

If I had to do it again, I could probably do it easily in about 30 minutes, but the lessons I learned the first time weren't worth it.

if you're near an Apple store, take it by and see what they say. While I think it's over, they have been known to just swap them out when people are honest about what happened. If nothing else, I've noticed their "repair" (they usually swap them out for a refurb) prices are often about what you'd pay someone else to fix it.
