keep in mind alot of the US sales were also people buying loads of them to send oversees at hiked up prices.

I brought 2 with me to india and sold them to coworkers there.

Some yes, but out of the 1 million + sold, I would hardly say 'a lot' qualifies.

There were also a lot of people that came to the US launch weekend to pick up their own iPad.

yeah ... i I just think the short supply is partly due to this ... not completely.

Now that they can be ordered overseas directly, I think a higher percentage of the allocation sent to US Stores will go more for actual consumers, instead of people buying them and shipping them.

If anyone is considering the SwitchEasy Nude, I just got mine yesterday. Overall I like it but the screen protector is worthless imo. The finish is nice & easy to hold on to but scratches REALLY easy. The extras for it are great also. To save the space for those that aren't interested, I wrote a full (long) review here: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-accessories/3863-switcheasy-nude-review.html.

There's a new program out called Air Display that's pretty neat. It lets you use the iPad as a 2nd monitor for your (right now mac only) computer. It's kind of trippy, but it works. It even streams video at a pretty acceptable refresh rate (there's just something slightly...noticeable about it)

Pretty cool stuff though.

Edited to say: Youtube video is what I was talking about. Just tried to play a "real" video and the framerate was right at 1-2 fps

Engadget did a review on that when the iPad first launched and said it was so buggy that it wasn't worth the money. Do you know if its more stable now?

no, this one is new. there was another program that came out around launch that supposedly sucked, but this one is pretty awesome (IMO anyway)

"NBC, Time Warner Willing to Ditch iPad for Flash"

http://www.dailytech.com/NBC+Time+Warner+Willing+to+Ditch+iPad+for+Flash/article18534.htm

Quote :
"Companies betting on iPad-like products from Dell and HP

Apple has had a pretty good week. They've become the most valuable tech company with their $221.1 billion market cap that beat Microsoft's $219.2 billion, and Apple shares closed down $1.17 to $244.05 while Microsoft's fell $1.06 to $25.01. What Apple CEO Steve Jobs might not be so happy about is the tough audience of some media firms he faced in Hollywood who voiced some bitter opinions about the iPad not having Adobe Flash Player available.

Media companies like NBC Universal and Time Warner made statements concerning upcoming touch-screen tablet devices from Dell and Hewlett-Packard that will more than likely carry Adobe Flash Player, and made it clear that "they won't retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad."

Apple and Big Media have been battling this Flash war in hopes of reaching a negotiation at some point. Jobs has cited several reasons as to why he won't use Flash, such as Adobe Flash products being 100 percent proprietary, security issues, Adobe's request to be a third-party developer to create apps, and their lack of support for touch-based services.

Instead, Apple uses HTML5 as their video software, which is the next major revision of HTML and aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich Internet application technologies, such as Flash. At the Hollywood conference amongst media firms, an Apple spokeswoman noted, "We believe in open standards like HTML5."

Media companies mentioned that software products like Google TV, which enables viewers to watch online video on their big-screen TV's, will cripple Apple's ability to dictate terms to media firms. In addition, media companies stated that switching to a Flashless iPad would be expensive to reformat and that it's "not be worth it because Flash dominates the Web."

While there are a lot of media firms that are pro-Flash, companies like Disney, CBS, Fox News and CNN have apps, shows and clips available using HTML5. While they only offer a handful of clips or shows, and some to a limited extent, it's some support, which was clearly not offered by those who criticized Jobs in the Hollywood conference.

Good luck to them. There are plenty of other places to get your iPad-friendly content, such as TV.com, ABC's viewer, Netflix, etc. If they want to purposefully exclude a part of their target market, that's just fucking stupid on their part.

I'm no fan of Flash, but I can see why they are doing this. The iPad's price is high to say the least and at least 3 other manufacturers are working on a similar product.

Apple needs to realize they can't just markup the price because they try to sell a life style instead of a product.

Those devices aren't going to go anywhere. They're all either underpowered or overpriced (compared to the iPad). There's a reason why Microsoft just got themselves out of this game.

What does that have to do with Hulu and Time-Warner not being willing to convert their media to an iPad-compatible format? If they're smart, they'll want their content to be seen by as many paying eyeballs as possible.

How are Hulu and TWC going to make bank off going to HTML5 (which will cost them to convert)?

It's just streaming media, the money is in the device.

Hulu and Time-Warner aren't going to make a dime from iPad users. That's kinda the point. Apple's already sold a million of them, so that's a million devices that Hulu/TW won't make money from. Sure it might cost a bit to convert content, but if Google and other video providers can do it (sometimes even on the fly), why can't Hulu and TW?

Again, this is just them putting their heads in the sand and being stupid. No businessperson in their right mind is going to say, "no, I'd rather not sell my product to these people."

Ability to watch Hulu isn't going to sell any of them, either. Hulu and TW will miss the boat if they choose to permanently ignore the iPad. They've already fucked up with Boxee.

I'm not sure "it'll hurt battery life" is better reasoning to not support something than "would have to completely re-encode every video on the site and implement an advertising model that doesn't currently exist on the device".

But hey, companies making dumb decisions and sticking their head in sand isn't mutually exclusive.

I'd go so far as to say that battery life is one of the lesser reasons why Flash won't appear on iDevices.

I agree that it'd be nice to see them work together better. But Flash *is* a pretty shitty way to deliver video, and it only dominates in browsers because of its pre-installed user base.

Just because streaming media is FREE to you doesn't mean they aren't making money off of it. You know those 30 second commercials you have to watch every now and again? I'll let you take it from here and connect the dots.

The analogy to be made here is that of GM and selling cars in California. California has higher emissions standards than in the rest of the US. GM says, "nooo we don't want to meet those standards, so we won't sell our cars in California." Tell me how fucking stupid it'd be to not sell cars in California.

Now, substitute GM with Hulu/TW, California with iPad, and emissions with video format.

Nah, that comparison is unfair. California is way too populace - it'd be like if they decided to not sell cars in like Rhode Island or a Dakota.

Theres no money in streaming video without the ability to charge for a subscription and/or put ads all up in that bitch. Even then its sketchy. For something like hulu, ads probably generate enough revenue, but for something like youtube they're probably still losing money.

Without the ability to strictly control the stream (something html5 doesn't offer) theres no chance you're going to make money with an advertising based stream.

The apple device market for streaming video is still too small for the major content owners to consider risking html5. They'd also be competing with the itunes store (which already makes them money) and netflix (who maybe makes them a little money). So really its not them putting their heads in the sand, its them evaluating whether they want to give their shit away for free (which destroyed print media) or continue to charge for individual eps/movies for mobile devices and then do ad based streaming on supported platforms.

Apple has hit the 2million iPads sold mark after only 60 days. It took the iPhone 72 days to break 1 million.

Cell phone market existed before the iPhone.

Everyone needs a cell phone.

Nobody needs a device that 'does nothing and replaces nothing' or however the skeptics phrased that.

well, i was thinking more along the lines of the fact that switching [to shitty] carriers is a huge thing to lots of people, just like signing 2 year contracts, expensive data plans, etc. you can buy the ipad once and use it for forever w/o paying for anything else. you cannot use the iphone (for its intended purpose) unless it has a cell & data plan. hence, commitment

this is irrelevant as all carriers in the United States are shitty, and thats putting it nicely.

And as the iPhone has already proven, switching to AT&T really isn't much of an issue for many many many people.

AT&T getting rid of unlimited 3g data plan for iPad ... new $25 2Gig plan, $15 plan is only for 200MB.

Also added a tethering plan for $20/month

http://mashable.com/2010/06/02/att-kills-ipad-unlimited-data-plan/

Looks like ill be dropping my data plan ... Didn't want to pay 15 per month anyway ... give me 50MB for $5 as an option, and I would pay that... 3G is simply for while in the car with the family ... I use wifi everywhere else (I also wanted the GPS capabilities, which is really why I bought the 3g version).

If your looking for a cheap stand for the iPad, you cant get one for like $1.30 something at office depot. It's actually just a business card holder, but works great for the ipad

Sorry if this was already posted, I didn't see it anywhere on here
