Don't let this topic creepy you out because I'm not out to harm anyone.

[jaws music]Why do people like this site so much? I was told by someone to join their facebook group so that I could get some info that I need when it becomes available. Anyway, I started typing in the names of classmates that I have lost touch with and discovered that even if they set their profile on private that their last name is still shown on the screen. This happens even when you just type in some random first name. Their college then shows up on the screen and so does their entire friends list with everyones first and last name. You can also track people by where they work. Can't they hide their last name and friends list? Myspace doesn't allow you to see anyones friends list if they have their profile set to private and you can't even see their url either now. All you would have to do if you were some crazy kiddnapper who lived near Cal Berkley would be to type in random first names of girls on facebook and type in their college at which point you would get their last name and could look them up in the phone book and get their address, so that you could go to their house and harm them. Why doesn't facebook do like myspace where you only see the first name of the person?[/jaws music]

because you can already do all the things that you suggest in facebook.

(and it seems like the phonebook is the dangerous thing in your situation)

its not as bad as it once was.

You can no longer do an advanced search for single people in your network or friends list.

you can hide your name from being searched period. and there's nothing forcing you to put your full name in facebook to begin with.

Well my point is that you have no clue how old someone is, or what they look like when you them up in the phonebook, if you don't go to their facebook page. But you are right, the phonebook does become dangerous when you can match peoples faces with rare last names that are given away on facebook after doing random searches of firts names.

Oh thanks! I guess I will have to do that. Where do you go to make it, so that only your first name appears?

^I say facebook is easier since everyone has their last name on the screen and their friends list seems to appear even when they set some things on private. Like I said, with myspace you only see the name John, or Jane on the screen which means you can't match their face with their Polish last name and look them up in the phonebook and then go harm them.

That doesn't do what I want it to do. I just want it like myspace where my first name appears on the screen, but you can search using my first and last name and find me. I don't think you can do that on facebook because there seems to be a lot of hot girls that are revealing their rare last names.

I don't have any privacy settings turned on mine other than contact information (Address/AIM/cell phone) I could give 2 shits less if people stalk my interests and music.

Of course, my name is common enough that I don't have to worry about people necessarily looking it up on the internet and finding my home address, even though I don't have a house phone so that wouldn't work either.

I tried my damndest to google myself and couldn't find anything thanks to an artist and a golfer who share my name. Even the facebook profile that comes up isn't myself.

^I guess you are lucky. I couldn't care less either, but I still don't like how facebook gives away peoples last names when you do a search for "Jane" or "John" in your local area. With my myspace they only see my first name, if someone does a random search of my first name and can't find out what my last name is.

change your name to whatever your first name is and then something fake for your last name.

Then make your "alternate name" your real name. i don't think that will show up for anyone. but i don't really know. it's intended for people who have changed their name or whatever. but it seems like it would work in your case.

^That's a wierd way of doing it, but I guess it would work. They should just make it like myspace where you use your real name and then can use your first name only for your display name. I'm not worried about it though.

Looking at a random photo gallery isn't stalking to me, but being able to find peoples last name, look them up, and then follow them is stalking. That is harder to do on myspace since no one seems to want to reveal their last name. All of those FSU girls back in the 1970's better be glad that there was no facebook, or Ted Bundy might have killed even more of them.

^i guess my point with the myspace comment was that you can look at a bunch of photos of people if their profile is set to public...whereas on facebook, you HAVE to have them as a friend before you can look at their photos

anyways

she's likely a friend of a friend. and some people give extra allowances for people like that. but again, you can turn that off.

^^^She isn't the friend of a friend since I have no friends on my facebook profile. I just made one because they alway mention facebook groups when you get e-mails from the student body president at NC State.

A lot of universities don't allow this anymore. My brother in-law is getting an MBA at Harvard and I couldn't even do a search for his e-mail address because I wasn't an employee, or student at Harvard. I had the same problem when I wanted to contact my cousin at Loras. I think State universities will eventually do this too. NC State no longer shows the parents home address along with the students school address. Public directories are still pretty safe since you can't see the persons photo, but they can become a problem after you find the person on facebook and learn their name.

Holy fuck. My last name is in the phone book with my address.

Big4Country if you can name one person who is in any way affiliated with ANYONE on this website who has been assaulted via facebook i will validate your fear of stealing your information. If anyone who is on facebook had an actual reason to stalk me chances are they could find out a way to get to me without using facebook. Otherwise its just the same as any other random public information source. If you put your phone number and shit up there big fucking deal. No one pays for those reverse lookup things. I wouldn't advise anyone to put their address up there, but chances are unless you're an asshole no one will have a reason to fuck your shit up. Let me re-iterate if they're doing it just at random then that information is public fucking record.

I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

^I am sure he probably didn't do it, but my point is that the crazy guy was walking on the Cal campus when he was caught with the 3 girls. When looking someone up in the phonebook you have no clue what they look like, but when looking on facebook, people like him could find the photo of someone that might turn them on and then they could use their last name to find their address in the phonebook. Ted Bundy would have loved facebook.

women definitely use facebook to stalk more than men imo. i base this on the facebook habits of myself and 2 other men and 2 other women. the dudes hardly stay on very long, and the chicks are all the time clicking through galleries etc

yeah so i found this ex gf on facebook, i added a bunch of her friends before i added her
i didnt even know these people, but they all added me without hesitation
so when i added her, she had her place of work listed
i sat outside her office in a parked car until she got off and followed her home
now that i knew where she lived, i drove by day after day
until one day, when she left for work, i went into her house and went through all her things

i found where she had been stalking me in years past, even had pictures of my former apartment

that bitch is crazy yo, freaks me out
