i always heard that mass murderer meant killing a group of people at one time (3 or more i think). a serial killer was one who killed 3+ in 3 separate events.

"I jumped up and down and said, 'Thank you, God,'" she said. "But still, I would like to know why would he do that to my daughter? What could she have done for him to do that to her?" Pittman's mother, Gloria Pittman, told WRAL News Tuesday afternoon that her son is not be capable of murder and that authorities were just trying to make an arrest. "I truly believe he did not do what they're saying he did," she said. "I don't really believe he did none of this. I don't. He didn' t do nothing with this." According to court records, Pittman was convicted in Edgecombe County in 1994 for taking indecent liberties with a 2-year-old. He was also convicted of assault and resisting police. A charge of soliciting prostitutes was dropped in 2007 because the arresting officer left the force. In Nash County, according to court records, Pittman was convicted of assault, larceny and trespassing. Court records show he has spent the past 15 years in Rocky Mount and the Battleboro community, where several of the victims were found. Each of the known victims was black, from Rocky Mount and had a history of drug use and run-ins with the law. Each was reported missing. Three other women with similar descriptions and backgrounds – Christine Marie Boone, Renee Joyce Durham and Yolanda Renee Lancaster – remain missing. The case has received attention from local and national media since WRAL News first reported in June on a possible connection in the slayings. Authorities, including the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, Rocky Mount Police Department and State Bureau of Investigation, have said very little about their investigation since forming a task force to look into the deaths. The Behavioral Analysis Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation has also been investigating."

So since the beginning of all of these killings they've only found one killer...sounds like Rocky Mount city police and the edgecombe police are not looking hard enough!
