http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/report-porsche-randd-says-electric-911-possible-needs-more-devel/

Quote :
"Porsche R&D says electric 911 possible, needs more development
In an interview with German magazine Motor Zeitung, Porsche's R&D director Wolfgang Dürheimer discussed the possibility of electrifying the iconic 911 sports car. Legendary Porsche tuners Ruf first showed a battery-powered prototype 911 called the eRuf last fall and then revealed a second-generation version (pictured) at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The eRuf Greenster was a major improvement over the original and Dürheimer praised the achievement of the smaller company.

Dürheimer doesn't rule out an electrified sports car in the future, but feels the technology is not quite ready for Porsche prime-time. The problem revolves around the size and weight of the batteries, and even discarding the conventional powertrain leaves the Greenster with a deficit of at least 500 pounds compared to a normal 911... and no luggage space to boot. As battery technology progresses, however, we can certainly expect a battery-powered sports car to emerge from Zuffenhausen in due course."

People have been cramming golf cart batteries into VW's for years. I've got one in my backyard, actually.

For all you grand touring/sedan lovers out there...

Quote :
"Porsche plans to expand Panamera lineup
Porsche has big plans for the Panamera. Over the next few years it is expected to be an engine of growth for the brand. Reviews for the car have begun to appear and most of the impressions are good. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the Panamera in person.

The Panamera's model line is about to get pretty crowded. At launch there is three models, the standard Panamera S, AWD Panamera 4S and the twin-turbocharged Panamera Turbo. A V6, V6 hybrid, diesel engines and a Turbo S or GTS model are all on the table. Obviously the V6 would be the entry-level model of the range, but it unfortunately would not use the classic flat-six Porsche engine because of the shape of the Panamera's engine bay.

The standard V6 model is just rumored but a Panamera hybrid (that would be powered the same V6) has been confirmed by Porsche. Porsche has also discussed openly the possibility of diesel-powered Panameras, pointing out it has many engines in the VW Group from which to choose from.

A sportier variant, dubbed either Turbo S or GTS seems pretty assured. In fact, I'd say that all of these possibilities have a very high likelihood of getting approval from Porsche. It's good that they're still working on performance models too; all this talk of hybrids, VW/Audi-sourced diesels and V6 engines has me a bit worried they could lose their performance focus.

^Fine... Here's something [NEW] Then...

Quote :
"Porsche Panamera Turbo reportedly tops Cadillac CTS-V's 'Ring record
It's been just over a year since Cadillac captured the title of fastest production four-door car when John Heinricy circulated the Nürburgring's north loop with a CTS-V in under eight minutes. Considering the pace of leap-frogging between the Nissan GT-R, Corvette ZR1 and Viper ACR it's a bit surprising that it took this long for someone to top the super-Caddy. What's not surprising is that it was a Porsche that finally outran the CTS-V.

Now that the four-door Porsche Panamera has been thrust upon the world, it was only a matter of time before one the test drivers from Weissach brought the crown back to the fatherland. The 500-horsepower Panamera Turbo lapped the Nordschleife in 7 minutes, 56 seconds, 3 seconds faster than the Cadillac.

When Heinricy set his 7:59 time last year, it was done in an automatic CTS-V in a single hot lap at the end of a test session. With any luck, we'll see Heinricy or perhaps one of the Corvette C6.R drivers like Johnny O'Connell head back to the Eiffel mountains for another go.

It's only some people that see Porsche as the maker of hardcore 911s, but in reality, they've always had some plush car, or one that's not in keeping with that image. There's been sportomatic (automatic...) 911Es, 914-4s, and you could argue the 928 wasn't a sports car either. Not to mention Porsche still makes more money as a design firm rather than a "sports car manufacturer". I think Porsche's generally made outstanding cars, though they're not for everyone. Even today's line up includes the very well selling 997 twin turbo cab, tiptronic, hardly a sports car by my definition.

That said, I've been reading a lot about the Panamera, and the weight saving measures they went to is rather astonishing, the amount of aluminum/magnesium, etc. used, and even triangular cut outs in the support members, strategic omission of certain parts (like metal fender liners, to leave only the plastic between the fender well and engine bay, beyond the bracing/chassis reinforcements) is pretty unusual, and awesome in my opinion. I very much look forward to driving one.

^just about every example you are citing is still a 2 door coupe, not some humpbacked 4 door abomination. All those examples were also used in GT racing to some degree.

I assure you this vehicle will be used in racing as well, and form has always followed function at Porsche,
not many people thought the 911 was particularly good looking before it earned it's keep either...

And this car is not a 911, it is a very good sedan; here's a couple of things I find interesting (from autoblog);
Optional ceramic discs, 6 piston monoblock calipers on 16.1 inch! rotors.
567 lb-ft, mated to a true double dry clutch gear box
Magnesium door frames, radiator mounts, etc. aluminum suspension and sub frames,
hood/fenders/doors/rear lid...

Keep in mind we're talking about the world's fastest production car around the Nurburgring,
and with this as a quote in it's review;
"...the dashboard illuminates with the "Launch Control" alert. Release the brake quickly and the
Panamera Turbo digs all four sticky Michelins into the pavement as it rips to 60 mph in a hallucinatory
four seconds. The automaker claims the car will hit 160 km/h (100 mph) in 9.0 seconds flat". Take
that in for a second.

This, sir is a serious machine.

I love Porsche through and through, but that thing's ugly. I have no doubt its fast and fun to drive, but so what I can't go 150 in I-40 every day to work, lol. And I think Cadillac will reply at the 'Ring. Afterall they set their initial record time with the slushbox version.

It's U-G-L-Y

They put another set of doors on a 911. Visually, thats all Porsche did. Which is a good thing IMO.

I'd be more disappointed with Porsche if they hadn't already sold-out by producing an SUV called pepper.

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

Quote :
"Wiedeking Is to Blame for the Porsche Disaster'
Now that Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has agreed to step down the path is clear for a takeover by Volkswagen. The decision leaves VW's Ferdinand Piëch the victor in this power struggle, but German papers warn that VW's future must not be dominated by the whims of the Porsche and Piëch families.

The curtain seems to have finally fallen on the ongoing power struggle between Volkswagen and Porsche now that Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has fallen on his sword, clearing the way for a VW takeover of the luxury sports car manufacturer.

Wiedeking and his Chief Financial Officer Holger Härter announced their resignations after a 15-hour marathon board meeting to determine Porsche's future. The company also announced that it would increase its capital by at least €5 billion ($7.1 billion).

After a meeting of the Volkswagen supervisory board on Thursday, CEO Martin Winterkorn said the company would push ahead with merger talks. The two companies are likely to be fully integrated by 2011 and Winterkorn said that the Gulf state of Qatar would buy Porsche options on VW stock equivalent to a 17 percent stake in the company. "Volkswagen and Porsche have excellent expertise and can use their resources together even better," he said on Thursday. The details of the combined company are to be announced at a VW supervisory board meeting on August 13.

but I think its pretty telling when the 4S and Turbo versions are not available with a manual transmission Hell, even the Cayenne GTS has a manual 6sp!

I think they've gotten to the point where the PDK is better than a standard manual in the sense that it can shift faster than you and the fact that 0-60 times are faster with the PDK than with a manual. True this may take away from the "driving experience," however, I think we are going to start seeing more paddleshifting (electronic shifting) automatics versus the traditional manual gearbox with clutch assembly. This does sadden me.

was talking with dubcaps about this last night. if it's from the factory, and it's fully functional...then go for it!

the sad thing is that someone will buy the $130,000+ RS and then do things like swap out the wing and buy AM exhaust. but they'll post pics on 6speedonline!!!!!!
