Man your Z06 was amazing on track. Honestly, my biggest complaint about it must be the rev limiter (on track) lol

RE: S2000, I was so disappointed in the lack of power, it’d take a miracle to get me interested again, though intimidating lift throttle oversteer sounds great! Too bad it’s not a coupe. :/

Lack of power as only complaint is a true testament to the cars overall engineering.

Regarding ap1 vs ap2...they changed it for a reason.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an indie Porsche shop around raleigh? I've been to West German Garage for BMW stuff, not sure if they do Porsche as well

I recommend West German garage. I like Tolga at European Performance, he's always done right by me, but just know that he's often optimistic on when you can pick up your car (If he says it's going to take a day, plan on up to 3 days and you won't be disappointed.). Otherwise, I've got no complaints with EP. I've never done business with West German, though if I had a european car for a daily I would.

West German is indeed a great and very fair/honest shop. They’re perennially booked though. What kind of Porsche and what do you need done?

I found this 1994 article to be a very interesting read

Holy shit longest URL ever???

"Inside Story: Shock therapy for Porsche: The prestigious German car firm was speeding to destruction, so its chief swallowed his pride and hired Japan's top consultants to improve outdated methods of production. John Eisenhammer charts the brutal remedies they prescribed at the company's plant near Stuttgart

JOHN EISENHAMMER Sunday 03 July 1994

AT THE very thought of his first impressions of Porsche, Chihiro Nakao claps both hands to his head and shakes it vigorously

'It was appalling,' he exclaims. 'Where is the car factory, I asked myself. It looks like a mover's warehouse. And there were no workers, just apes clambering up and down shelves.'

Apes? Warehouses? Is that any way to talk about what Germans consider God's gift to the sports car world? It is if you belong to Shin-Gijutsu, one of the toughest consultant groups around, for whom praise is an inefficient use of energy. Yoshiki Iwata, the group's founder, is equally graceless. Porsche 718 Boxster unveiled with turbocharged four-cylinder engines

The Boxster grows up! Looks pretty good. I wish the taillights weren't so dark, though.

Quote :
"Porsche has officially unveiled the new 718 Boxster.

Looking instantly recognizable, the model has a more masculine front fascia which features larger air intakes and new bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. Moving further back, we can see revised side skirts, larger side air intakes, and new door handles. Other highlights include three-dimensional LED taillights and a new accent strip with Porsche lettering.

The interior largely carries over but the model has been equipped with a new dashboard that has circular air vents. Drivers will also find a new steering wheel and an updated Porsche Communication Management system.

The entry-level 718 Boxster is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat four engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Despite having significantly less displacement than the previous 2.7-liter flat six, the four-cylinder engine produces 35 hp and 74 lb-ft more than its predecessor.

Buyers looking for something more powerful can order the 718 Boxster S which features a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four engine with 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 35 hp and 43 lb-ft of torque.

When equipped with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, the 718 Boxster can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 170 mph. The 718 Boxster S completes the same task in 4.0 seconds before topping out at 177 mph.

Despite being significantly faster and more powerful, the new Boxster models are more fuel efficient as fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 13 percent.

The Porsche 718 Boxster is already available to order and U.S. pricing starts at $56,000 and tops out at $68,400 for the 718 Boxster S. Deliveries are slated for late June which makes the model a perfect summertime companion."

Cliff notes observations from a Porsche owner:

-anyone else notice they raised the hood up significantly? The hallmark Porsche raised fenders (behind the headlights) are barely more than mild bumps in this redesign. Looks a lot like the Panamera.

-big price increase over the 2015 models, as Porsche plans to realign the Cayman and Boxster with the Boxster now costing more than the Cayman.

-new turbo engines employ variable vane geometry compressors to minimize lag. The only other Porsche engine that employs this is the 911 Turbo.

-new models weigh about 100 lbs more than old model. Technically around 75 lbs but they shrank the fuel tank by 2.5 gallons

-new engines sound like shit, and no matter what Porsche states in their marketing material this engine change was done purely for fuel emissions.

-There's been a boost in Cayman sales as people scramble to get the last of the 6's.

Well, at least they didn't lower their HP/Tq outputs as part of the fuel efficiency effort. I'm not against fuel efficiency if it isn't lame; heavy hybrid systems, inability to provide an enthusiastic driving experience, etc. The style is not as bold as I like. IMO, the steering wheel looks tacky.

The lines look flat, though the floating "PORSCHE" script on the rear is pretty cool. I miss the golden days of:

I’m not a huge fan of the redesign, I think the current Boxster looks fine.

In other news, Porsche of SouthPoint quoted me $852.73 to change the engine air filter and $354.95 to
“charge the battery and test the charging system” on my GT3. Yeah, no thanks.

ahmet,

whats the real cost of ownership of a 997 turbo ?

I'm negotiating with the wife.

I want a mustang gt350r she wants a panamera turbo joking about a 997 turbo as a compromise but the mustang is going to have mostly mustang maintenance where the porsches will have crazy porsche maintenance right ?

So you’re not serious about the 997 turbo?

RE: Maintenance. MK1 and MK2 997 turbos are vastly different vehicles, and share very little...

The MK1 997 turbo should be pretty easy to keep up, and I have no clue about the MK2.

I really like (old?) Porsches, but the GT350R is quite the vehicle, I’m not sure I’d kick that out of the
garage.

Yeah the Porsche will either be a 996 turbo or a 997. The more I look at it the more I want the Porsche. The mustang is awesome and if I get the r model I have the feeling it will hardly depreciate at all (200/ year). But the 996 is a hell of a car and the 997.1 even more so.

I'm seeing 997s in the 60s and 70s. Is it realistic to pick one up around 75 in good shape or will these models always be the molested ones?

Basically 75k is my shopping cap, and if like the car to be fun on a track day kind of experience.

I'll probably keep it forever in the slot that i have now given up on the galaxie to hold.

you aren't going to get more car per dollar than the base 350. the R you are paying 10-12k almost exclusively for carbon fiber wheels and a badge. i'd probably still go for an 09+ turbo with pdk, bar, and seats but finding a turbo pdk that's not a convertible has proven difficult.

i like real manuals... knowing the PDK is faster... i still like doing something.

The R model really isn't that much more than the regular track package... only 6k IIRC.

But it deletes the magnetic dampers and still has the Sync 3 radio option.

The 997.1 and 996 are just more dream car for me... the thing is a 500hp n/a mustang will probably never happen again where the 911 turbo will probably stay its current configuration for the foreseeable future until its forced to go hybrid or something.

Between the 996 and the 997 does one have a stronger bottom end then the other?

The 996 and MK1 997 turbo bottom ends (and basically the entire engine) are almost identical with
many directly interchangeable parts. The 997.1 has variable vane turbos, and a better AWD system +
a more permissive stability control system. The PDK was not available for the 997.1 turbo. The 997.2
turbo is a completely different drivetrain, with absolutely none of the same architecture. It’s basically a
different model all together that happens to look similar.

The 997.1 chassis is probably as new as I would go on the Porsche front personally. I like the 996 just
fine, however the 997 offers a few upgrades like bigger brakes and stiffer suspension that may be nice
to have for the occasional track use side of things. It’s also a more plush street car. Or, you could just
buy a GT3.

Anytime holmes. I like to help when I can.

On that note, the 997.2 turbo appears to be a spectacular car (not that the .1 isn’t), I was simply
saying I wouldn’t personally do it because I’m not comfortable with all the newfangled stuff, not trying
to talk you out of it, and I don’t know enough about it to recommend for or against. I do know that
with the PDK, it is a legitimate alternative to a hyper car (especially with a tune I’d imagine). That said,
the 997.1 looks like a fantastic car as well, they’re quick and look great. I’m simply not familiar with
the second generation cars.

RE: Facebook, I’m not on there often but I’ll accept next time I am (and I’ll know who you are ).

Someone over on Planet-9 took the liberty to post exhaust audio links for all 2015 981s and 2017 718s.

http://www.planet-9.com/718-chat/116653-your-reaction-new-718-a-11.html

These clips were recorded by Porsche so they're all probably as favorable sounds as possible. The difference is pretty clear to me.

Hm..

I don't know how I feel. I kind of like the deeper tone from the turbo, but I'd really have to hear it in person. There's the mechanical feel to the sound of an N/A that I love, but at the same time I really enjoy the weight in the tone of the 2.5L turbo. I could be swayed either way, but having that deeper tone gives the perception the car has a lot more grunt to it; similar to how something may feel quality because it feels heavy in your hand.

Perhaps I'm just too easy to please. I'd love to hear them in person back to back.

Thanks for sharing Teggy

I've had my 996 turbo for a year and a half and they are not cheap to own (especially not to put on track). Tires are like $2k per set and you have very few options in the stock size. Changing the plugs is a 5-6 hour job and the interval is pretty short (like 12.5k miles I think).

They are also needlessly complex in stupid ways. Like the power assisted clutch, which sucks anyways and leaks/breaks on most of them (you can remove it with a parts kit for $1k and 8 hours of your/a shop's time).

They are also getting pretty old. Mine is blowing foam out the vents, there's a lot of wind noise from the sunroof, the regulators needed work because they weren't dropping down when you open the door anymore, and on and on.

But they are super hot cars and are a blast to drive, so you have to decide if it's worth the money to you.

I still say you should buy a 997 Turbo instead. Newer car, and the rule of thumb with Porsches is to always buy the newest S model you can afford. Though in cases like Turbos I think "newest" suffices

I know I'm going to get flamed for this but the more I look at them the more I actually prefer the 996 nose to the 997 turbo. The nose of the 997 looks weird where it bumps out for the two radiators on each side and for some reason it bothers me.

It looks like

Items I'm still researching
1: will a standard double dinn CD player fit?
2: where is the fuel pump?
3: that spark plug thing 12 plugs every 12k miles is nuts no way that should happen but I better find out?
4: if one should get froggy how much power can the bottom end handle with appropriate turbos/intercooler/fuel capacity
5: find a green one... Any green one...

I have to interject.

You could’ve had GREAT Porsches, you had... not a great one. When I think Porsche, I don’t think an
LT1 swapped 944. A Cayman S, or a 997 Carrera S or something, those are good cars.

Just sayin’

(That's what I was thinking and that was my point)

I'd relate owning a 944 to a 240z before I compared it to a 911 turbo. But that's just me.

Unrelated, but the 944 was a blast. I enjoyed it for the 2 years before the lt1 swap and the 3 years after it. But that's not what I was in the market for the last 3 years I've been buying cars.

I'm not comparing my 944 to the 996/997/987 variants and don't know why you'd make that connection, but I took the bait anyways. I've been looking at Cayman S and 996 models at the time I bought my last two cars. I'm not discrediting that they are great cars to own; I really enjoyed driving TKE-Teg's Cayman S. Ownership is another thing...

This quote is one of the considerations why I didn't go P-Car. Not because they aren't fantastic, again it's that upkeep (time and money). That was what my original comment was directed towards.

Yeah i learned my lesson on overly ambitious projects and farming out too much work. I'm just looking at numbers really.

I have no desire for a pdk as you mentioned above.

I don't want to deal with the direct injection setup as you mentioned above and i'm just getting an idea of where i need to be in the industry and what mistakes could cost.

Stock 997.1 turbo with a chip and exhaust is the highest probability/goal right now. I found a 996 RUF R-turbo that could be perfect other than being red.

I'm not getting a 38k car with turbos chip intercoolers etc. if i do anything to the car other than bottom end work it will be done by me.

My subaru was well sorted and i'm comfortable with what i can do. I will not be farming this out to anyone like i did the galaxie. I just want to be sure i know what i'm doing or getting into before i scatter the guts of a 30k engine on the road.

Also... i have 5 cars this isn't intended to be a DD... just not intended to be a race car either.

If i were to get one today it would either be this one.

“Probably 100%” somebody needs to look at how probabilities work...

The probability of needing internal work on a 996/7 turbo are probably very unprobable, at least 0%,
maybe even less probable.

All - what are your thoughts on the 'sweet spot' of the original Cayman / Cayman S in the used market? I've been looking at a few different cars (135i, Cayman, Z4 Coupe, etc) and am wondering what the 'right' amount is to spend if there is such a thing. It seems you can get a base Cayman with decent mileage (50-70k) for around 21-23k...thoughts?

Last year when I was in the market, I saw Cayman S 987.1 models (2005-2008) with the Sport Chrono Package selling for around $30k with 50k-75k miles. I don't know what the market is for those now. I feel like there's a LOT more bang for buck fun upgrading to the S model over the base. Wait it out, spend the extra $3-$5k on an S, unless you really don't care about how the car drives and just want the badge and the body.
