I'm really enjoying this show and just to be safe I don't think it would hurt to have two different threads. The other thread can be dedicated solely to discuss events that have happened only on the HBO series.

IS there any talk of when the next season will begin? I iimagine they are going to go with the ending in book one for the season finale, or at least...

do I have to say spoiler in this thread since it is a spoiler thread?

Show her getting attacked and then cut to credits and not show us who it was?
I mean that would be typical TV BS to end it right there and leave everyone hanging for a year or whatever it is...

I just bought Dead Until Dark this weekend, which is the first book in the series. Now that the season is over, I'm gonna start reading it, so hopefully in a week I can discuss this with you!

Ok, then don't read what I just wrote below!

BTTT

So, all our favorite characters are dead, as follows the books, and the wild card dryad lady has shown up, although it a much different fashion.

So, in the book she roams around and takes tribute from the supernaturals while reveling in madness and debauchery and drunkeness...

So Tara was definitely drunk and maybe mad, but how does all that tie in? And who are they going to have killing Lafayette, b/c in the book he was killed by a town person, not a supe, which is what they made it seem like...

I'm curious about something. I just started reading the book last night, and I'm only through the first chapter. Maybe this gets answered later in the book, but...it says that Jason and Rene went to highschool together. How is that possible if Rene's past is the same past they portrayed in the TV show? Or was Rene's past rewritten for the show?

actually, i kinda like that. that means that, while the ending is probably the same, the means to the end are different - makes for a more interesting read.

That and I am enjoying the sidestories that were not in the books. Lots more charecter development outside of sookie. Like the whole Jason's girlfriend being into V and totally whacko...
Tara's exorcism... bills made vamp. hopefully will provide more depth to the books for those who have read them.

LAFAYETTE LIVES!

And I'm betting Barry the Bellhop gets a bigger part in the show.

thank you

ok! so i finally got the books from my sister in law and started reading. She had 4-7 and 9. I started reading 4 yesterday, without having read 1-3, thinking "doesn't matter--i know the books are different but I'm watching the show too." With the first chapter realized I had skipped a lot of action, but I couldn't put down 4 though (I was already involved) so I plugged through.

I stopped at B&N on my way home and picked up 1-3 and 8. I finished No. 4 (Dead to the World) in one evening. I'm going to start 1 today (Dead Until Dark) during my lunch and we'll see how tonight goes

SO! Wow......Sookie and Eric hook up!? Niiiiiiiiiiiice...shame he can't remember it though. Once I plug through 1-3, I can't wait to see what happens between them in Book 5

/officially obsessed with Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood rant

so has everyone in this thread read all 9 books? Charlaine Harris announced at Comic Con that she's been contracted to write three more. The 10th book looks like it's slotted to release May 2010 according to her website. A compilation of the side short stories comes out October of this year.

Gotta say...I love Eric + Sookie versus Bill + Sookie. Who do you think Niall meant?

And I'm enjoying the set up and more manipulative Eric that we see in the show building the love triangle than the books have. Him inviting Lorena was A+!

And other comic con news for the series...season three, though not officially annouced by HBO, will introduce the weres, Russell Edginton, and Debbie Pelt!

Eric and Sookie > Quinn and Sookie > Alcide and Sookie > Bill and Sookie.

I've read the first 5 so far. Need to pick up the next couple books.

Looking forward to the final action scene from Dead as a Doornail. Vampires with big ass swords, yeahhh.

I must say, I really do love how they brought in elements of Club Dead with Lorena in to these two episodes. She holding Bill there, torturing him by keeping him awake during the day, is a nice blend of the books and series. Even though they are tweaking that part.

And with Godric dressed in white robes, looks like they're keeping up that part of the books w/ Godric offering himself to the sun as a sacrifice b/c he's ready to die.

Hmmm...so Godric is at the party, and not just missing after the FOTS lockdown/infiltration. I wonder if he'll sneak away and still meet the sun like in the books...or if they're gonna hang on to him.

Looks like the explosion is setting things up for the FOTS shoot out at the party in book 2. Ya know what that means!!! Eric gets injured and Sookie tastes his blood for the first time

With Lorena being sent away, but not looking like she's ready to give up Bill so easily, I can definitely see her returning in Season 3 in Mississippi to torture Bill more like in the books. Sookie staking time!!

I had to double check...I didn't think she had tasted him in LDID after she was attacked, but she did (not named Maryann in the books; the maenad is Callisto)...as well as Pam, Chow & Bill plus a human blood transfusion.

However, they use she having his blood after the nest attack in the books as being more significant in starting their blood bond though. And it's the one that makes Bill angry.

Nah the explosion was in book 6, but I think AB is using the explosin in lieu of the ambush gun assault that FOTS launches at the party and not trying to be like book 6 in that respect

I'm not sure where they're going with Tara and Eggs and the meneiad tho... in the book, sam ran around with her, the local vampires gave her tribute, and she just went away.

And it really doesn't look like Godric was going to meet the sun. I think we'd have seen evidence of that by now, tho I'm guessing maybe the explosion kills him.

In the books Sookie goes to the orgy the first time (w/ Eric) and finds Tara and Eggs there sexin it up so I guess Alan Ball just ran with that. I am still hoping for this "date" with Eric to take place in the show and for him to possibly kick Maryann's ass in an all out vampie vs. maenad fight. Plus Alexander Skarsgard in Lycra Leggings? Yumm!

hahaha, yeah the pink lycra would be awesome. someone asked him that at Comic Con...Ball didn't really answer, but Skarsgard showed off pink socks he was wearing at the time

And with them doing flashbacks in the series...I wish they could fit in another flashback scene for Eric somehow. Like an 18th century flashback, or even a more recent flashback like Eric during the 70s

^ There are quite a few differences between the first book and first season. I skipped the first book when I read the series as well but later read it because somethings come back in to play that were not in the TV series. Really you could go either way.

read the first book, there are several things in there that aren't in the show. tara isn't nearly as big a character, and of course, they kill off lafayette. i think if you're gonna read the series you should def start at the beginning.

Lindsey Haun to play Hadley, Sookie's cousin/Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq's girlfriend (assuming they go with that part of the story in the series)

So for those who have been reading the series, which was your favorite book thus far?

I have to go with book 4 (Dead to the World). I have always liked Eric's character more so than Bill's so this it was a big treat to read it. That shower sex scene with Sookie and Eric was quite fun to read, especially when picturing AS. Please can they cover this on the show at some point!?!

My second would have to be book 7 (All Together Dead). Don't really remember why. I blew through the books so fast that I am thinking of reading them again... is that crazy?

4 is also a favorite of mine, and I loved every page of it. I started reading that one again this past weekend, but I'm taking my time this time through.

Also loved 6, Definitely Dead. Though I think Eric + Sookie is the best relationship, I did enjoy she and Quinn's. It's also where we meet Amelia, and she's one of my favorite characters in the novels. I hope if the series lasts that long that AB will bring her in.

I enjoyed 7 a lot as well, and couldn't put it down (hell I read them all pretty fast, but this one in particular). I think b/c of the new setting, the introduction to so many more vampires and Sookie being completely engulfed in their world is what makes it a favorite for me. After 6 books being in the South, I was ready for a scenery change--Lake Michigan was definitely a good one. Having Barry back and the two of them exploring their telepathy was a lot of fun too.

The title of Book 10 is Dead in the Family. Oooooooh...wonder what that means! I plan to read all 9 again b4 the 10th one comes out in May.

this is a pretty good read...no actual event spoilers, just situational spoilers and critique of the next episode as a whole. it's written by a guy that's seen I Will Rise Up already, and by his accounts it's gonna be a doozy!

http://www.televisionaryblog.com/2009/08/fly-on-wall-advance-review-of-next.html

watched the episode again last night...and there were a few subtle looks or remarks that I didn't notice or really resonate at first watch building up Sookie & Eric's relationship. The biggest for me was Eric saying, "I'll be fine," to Sookie b4 taking his place on the meet the sun platform. Up until now, other than keeping her word, she hasn't been very fond of him to warrant him reassuring her about his safety. He said it to her b/c HE wanted to...like an animal performing for his mate.

and I hope he re-gravels her driveway hahaha

I'm sad Godric is gone, but glad they are keeping a good bit of the forms from the book.

And speaking of which, shouldn't we have seen some were-wolves by now? Or did they come into the plot After Maryann?

And I hope Sookie's great grandfather or her "fairy godmother" show up

Yeah we should've seen a were in the FOTS. Remember there was a hispanic Were that was a secretary for the FOTS but a spy for the Weres? She's the one that helped Sookie escape the church after GodFREY killed Gabe. Then Sarah Newlin ran them down with her car and was arrested

Alan Ball has said there will be weres in season 3, so maybe we'll see at least one when Bill goes to New Orleans to meet with the Queen. Weres did serve as bodyguards outside the Queen's home.

I've read other spoilers online about the series that....HERE IT COMES IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT
*
*
*
*
Eric flies in the final episode with Sam and Arlene's children. I thought with the final synopsis (I put it in the other thread) that "Sam puts his trust in an unlikely ally" that person may be Carl. Poor guy's been a prop all season, and Maryann certainly isn't very nice to him (NO ONE NEEDED TOWELS! *WHACK!*) that he might betray her to give Sam and the gang an idea on how she can be defeated. But after reading about Eric, maybe Sam goes to him.
I also think from that synopsis that with "The Queen tells Eric to keep a lid on Bill's inquisitivenss" that this may be when Eric learns that Bill was sent by the Queen to seduce and gain Sookie's trust so the Queen can have her at her disposal. With us knowing we'll meet Hadley, and knowing how she plays part in that from the books, it seems likely. We'll see!!
*
*
*
*
End spoiler from series/books

It's anyone's guess though as to how Maryann will play out and resolve...Alan Ball has gone so much further with her story than the books did.

Oh, and Bill definitely effed up when he told Sookie that she would feel sexual attraction to Eric after she had his blood...hellooooo, you gave her your blood too, buddy! She'll put those two things together sooner or later...

^ No kidding about the blood Bill/Eric/Sookie thing. I liked how in the books Sookie never really knows if it was the blood that made her attracted to Eric. But in show they just came straight out and told us, not leaving much to the imagination.

I miss seeing/hearing things from only Sookie's perspective having to put things together ourselves.

wtf with Sookie doing hand lasers, whatever the hell it was, on Maryanne. Could this have something with Sookie being a fairy? I dont recall any powers like that from the books.

per others on other blogs...Sookie never shot any hand lasers in the LDID or at any point in the series. She was only able to repell Callisto (aka Maryann) b/c of her fae blood (which she didn't know about at that point) and the protection Eric & Bill gave her during the final scene with her. Seems like AB is throwing this hand laser thing in to emphasize her faerie lineage.

Book 10 (Dead in the Family) synopsis!
http://www.whsmith.co.uk/CatalogAndSearch/ProductDetails-Dead+in+the+Family+-9780575089341.html

Quote :
"Sookie Stackhouse has finally settled into a relationship with the Viking vampire Eric, and her errant brother Jason seems to have his life in order, too. But all the other people in Sookie's life - Eric himself, her former lover Bill, her friend and boss Sam - are having family problems. Eric's maker shows up with Eric's 'brother' in tow, the ailing Bill can only be healed by a blood sibling, and Sam's brother's marriage is about to take place ...or will it? The furor raised by the coming out of the two-natured has yet to settle; some people are just not ready to sit down to dinner with a man who turns into a dog. And Sookie herself is still recovering from her last ordeal. She's definitely improving, physically and mentally, but she's always going to have some dark moments now. The werewolves tell her that there have been strange and ominous passers-by in the Stackhouse woods; now Sookie is about to come face-to-face with one of her more distant relatives ..."

another distant relative??? who the hell could that be?

Oh yeah...and of course--YAY!!! Finally! Only taking 10 books for she and Eric to be in an actual relationship
