excerpt
Quote :
"Even more frustrating is how we now have decades of fans that don’t seem to be able to realize that simply chanting the three syllables of N-C-State is significantly easier and more powerful than the ridiculous Nnnnnnnnn Cccccccccc Staaaaaate. NC State.

For example, as ABC televised the crowd rush the court after the win over Carolina the audible noise was the hum behind a garbled mess that was supposed to be Nnnnnnnnn Cccccccccc Staaaaaate. NC State. Nobody outside of the Wolfpack family had a clue what was being said. It’s absurd that cheerleaders and fans expect 20,000 fans at basketball games and 60,000 fans at football games to be able to hold the cadence, the timing, the rhythm and achieve unison of this ‘cheer’ when a simple, booming “N-C-State” would/could rock…AND be heard by others!

Ladies and gentlemen…let’s do something about this!!! Pass this entry around to friends on the internet and especially on campus. Get this feedback to the cheerleaders and ‘mic-man’ who leads student cheers at football games. The only way that we can finally get this right and add some muster to our game environment is to take control of this on your own."

i back this movement 100%, and you should too!

Couldn't agree more.

Every non state fan I know who has heard that laughed at how stupid it was. It really does emblazon us as idiots, as it sounds stupid and all these fucking frats keep pushing it. I'd pay money to have this tradition broken.

The first down woof woof woof one too. How cheap is that? It's the most plastic, bush league, retarded chant. Yet we don't have anyone going around on campus saying QUIT THIS SHIT! Seriously, we need to print flyers and post them all over campus to get the point across that this is gay.

Might as well say: Weeeeeee Areeeeeee Redneckkkkkkkks WE ARE REDNECKS!

And you would like the chant, you probably are one of those fratboys that love that shit. Problem is, it sounds like ass, no one can understand it, and it's as weak as a limp dick. What's wrong with:

N - C - State
N - C - State
N - C - State

It'd be louder, everyone can do it, and it's comprehendable on broadcasts to help our identity. For fucks sake

When I came to State in the Fall of 2002 we had two versions of the N C STATE chant. There was the one that the band did with the long drawn out Nnnnnnn Ccccccc Staaaaate N C STATE! The band and students both used to be into it and alternated rocking back and forth (i.e. person 1 rocks forward, person 2 rocks back, and person 3 rocks forward and so on) all while throwing up the wolf hand signal.

The other one was the one that the students would start the stands and in the mass of people trying to get into the gate in the SE corner next to the Murphy Center. It was very loud b/c even the long parts were very short and crisp. It was N (short pause) C (short pause) State (short pause) NC STATE (said very quickly) repeat. The chant usually lasted around 8 cycles. Also we raised the wolf hand sign into the air with our right hand and pumped it like pumping a fist. I thought it was still common, but I noticed that it had not been done in the stands as often. I'm not sure how it is up there now since my graduation. I'm sure a lot of you know the chant I'm talking about.

Exactly.

The problem is the ignorant fanbase right now, and that starts with the students. About 3-4 years ago most people knew how to do the chant slow and together, and it sounds awesome. I remember hearing it LOUDLY at the Gator Bowl, for example, after we started owning ND.

It's been a good chant for decades. Maybe we need to have a chant practice or some education or something...cause it's not the chant thats at fault.

i too feel that 'nnnnn ccccc sstate nc state' is totally fucking retarded

BECAUSE:

Quote :
"when the fans do it it's terrible. it never sounds good. ever."

Quote :
"the band does it much more drawn out, and it sounds good. when the band says "N C STATE" it's at a normal pace, not that sped up shit that happens when fans chant it."

that's because the band has a sense of rhythm and timing, you can't expect a bunch of drunk tards and rhythmically inept people to make it work...........honestly whenever the stadium tries to start that cheer it is completely unintelligible and sounds like total shit from the field or away from the student section. Whenever it gets started up I do a little carl face inside.

also what brassmonkey said, probably what you're thinking of is the different version that is chanted to the drumline cadence after we receive a punt, that one doesn't have any trying to say ncstate as fast as you can at the end

There's a simple way to correct this with the student body. Start with the freshmen and when they do that Wolfpack Welcome thing that they do at the beginning of every Fall, teach them how to do the chants. I know only a certain portion of freshmen attend, but that'd be enough to have the chants started/performed right in the stands. It seems like the students that would attend the Wolfpack Welcome event would most likely be those that have a bunch of school spirit down the line. Perhaps even teach them in student orientation.

And maybe they should include it as a part of the [Insert College Abbreviation] 100 class, because it would serve more of a purpose than half of the crap they taught in there (how to get on the internet, wtf?).

The problem is everyone trying to do it in hyperspeed. I blame the proliferation of energy drinks.

i don't even do the "hands held over head" clap thing anymore.....because some people are idiots and don't understand the speed of it. By the 5th clap, half the people in the stands are into the full speed clap already.

yeah they're pretty fucking retarded and it makes it hard as hell to keep yourself in time playing it if they're all loud enough.....

i mean just watch the fucking drum majors' hands or just listen to the damn thing, holding a beat is one if the simplest things ever, and that is why these cheers reflect so poorly on our school's collective intelligence

also would it kill you guys to learn the words to the alma mater? I was watching the video in this article
http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2007/10/22/will-you-please-get-this-message-out/

and it's like the alma mater is playing -dead slience-, still playing, gets to the part near the end -NNNNNCCCCCCCCCCCCCC STATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE- -dead silence- again

some cheers work better for basketball than they do for football

the chant in question is one of those

Quote :
"i don't even do the "hands held over head" clap thing anymore.....because some people are idiots and don't understand the speed of it. By the 5th clap, half the people in the stands are into the full speed clap already."

they should have kept this as only being done after the fast fight song during the last tv timeout of a basketball game. doing it before a basketball game and now before a football game has caused it to lose its power and significance...especially since people don't understand the concept of rhythm...

How do you mean jumbled? I've never really looked at how they display it up there.

And I agree that doing the slow clap at the beginning of games is ruining it.

Honestly I agree with that, I think the slow clap should be restricted to basketball because it is much more powerful and you can actually hear it well since it's a smaller, enclosed venue.

Since we're talking about staying in time with chants, how about telling the student section not to rush the fight song and Red and White when we are marching. This is the first time in the my 3 years that the students are about 4-5 counts ahead of us. I know it's hard since we aren't facing them until the end, but it's been better.

^ Wow a site that acknowledges our existence without bashing us. Interesting. State Fans Nation gives props for this thread. I guess it is cyclical now.

I will say I agreed with all points made. It's time for our fans to know the difference between the Red & White cheer and the NC State fight song. When I am at a game I sing the fight song, but always find myself alone doing so it seems.

I wonder if this topic inspired Chris Clark's post to encompass the whole ACC. You have to admit the SEC is by far one of the most passionate fanbases out there in terms of college football.

what also really annoys me is the speaker they have in the student section, where you can hear the cheerleader or whoever say "nc state" at the end of that chant and "block that kick" in the gayest voice i've ever heard
