Be prepared to do battle trying to get the 480 within a month of releasing probably.

Yeah especially with a lot of nvidia people who still haven't gotten their card giving up and jumping into that race as well haha.

AMD has reported that they have large quantities of the 480 ready to ship. That's good news for AMD fans. I'll be sitting here waiting on the 1080 to come in to stock for what seems like forever. Oh well, Intel graphics for another month or so...

I saw several Founders Edition ones available this morning in combos with gaming mice and such but havent heard great things about those. Right now I am just waiting on more reviews to come out to decide which brand and type I want to go with then I can start looking for that one specifically. My GTX 960 arrived today so will be able to at least get my new system rolling this evening. New monitor should get here tomorrow.

Let me know how you like that GTX 960. I am contemplating getting one to save some money and still provide an upgrade until 1070s materialize.

Yeah I just couldn't wait for a 1080 and didn't want to rush a decision on a $600 dollar card trying to get one as soon as they come in stock haha. The 970 & 980 seemed too expensive as a hold me over card so just got a 960. Using a 460 in my current system so once I upgrade the 960 to the 1080 Ill just put that in my older system and that will keep it reasonable for another few years probably.

Back in January I got a 960 to help me wait for pascal's arrival. I was replacing a 460 and had been on low settings for a while and finally hit a few games that simply wouldn't run.

I got a 2GB version. To do it again I'd get a 4GB model.

Having been on lower settings for a while and getting used to it I'm not in a hurry to move to pascal. I'll probably wait for the next thing or the thing after that.

Is there a particular gtx 960 that I should look into (on Amazon)? I know MSI and EVGA are both (or at least used to be) solid brands, but I can't differentiate between the 2GB variants. Help? Thanks!

Why wouldn't you get the 4GB version? It's hardly any pricier and on modern games 2GB is a huge bottleneck even at 1080p.

It's $40-$60 difference if I am comparing them correctly.

Depends on which card. I'm seeing 4GB versions for $179-189. The extra $20-40 is completely worth it for 4GB. 2GB is going to be a huge bottleneck unless you're only playing at like 1024 by 768.

e.g.

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Clocked-Graphic-04G-P4-3962-KR/dp/B00VX1MJQ8/

$189.99.

Hence why it's challenging to determine which card is potentially worth the expenditure.

I would say in 2016 you should not buy a card with less than 3-4GB of VRAM. When I had 2 460's in SLI the performance was great but I had to upgrade to a 580 at the time because the 2GB limitation was horrible even at 1080p. That was years ago.

That's for the tip. I have not embarked on building/upgrading a computer in about six years. I did notice that the card in the link you posted does appear to be a bit smaller than some of the other variants.

That is the one that I picked up got it installed last night seems to be doing just fine. I have only installed blizzard games so far but was able to throw WoW on ultra settings and was getting 100 fps. Having never used a 1440 monitor or G-Sync will be interesting to see how things look once I get that added. I have avoided buying some of the more graphic intensive games the past few years because I didnt feel like my PC would handle them well. Think I may give Shadows of Mordor a try now once everything is running and seems stable but probably will wait until I have the 1080 for those games.

I'm really tempted to do some upgrades. My local Microcenter has the i7-6700k for $289 which is $25 cheaper than Newegg and you also get $30 off a motherboard when you get it with a processor.

I priced out the 6700k, a Asus z170-pro and 16gb of Corsair for $565 total after tax.

I'm still running a super old i7-950 Bloomfield that came out in 2009. It runs nicely at 4.0ghz and paired with a 980 ti I'm not sure there's a CPU bottleneck in any games. However for other things like Photoshop/Lightroom it might be nice. Plus I'm stuck with an older motherboard without good SATA III support so my Samsung EVO SSD isn't running at it's full potential. The 950 is 7 years old...

That is a great deal on that 6700k. I just upgraded to that and a ASUS z170 pro gaming. I just saw an article where the benchmarks from the i5-6600k if overclocked was the same if not better than the i7-6700k. If the i5 has a good price and all you do is gaming, I would save some money and go with the i5.

Yeah I do some video and photo editing that would benefit from the hyper threading and seeing as my current CPU is 7 years old who's to say games won't start taking advantage of hyper threading in the next 5 years.

If I were more patient, I would have gone with the 6800k, but I had already waited long enough and built this machine like 2 months ago.

^Because the 6800k is a Broadwell-E chip not a Skylake chip and it's not as good at overclocking. Skylake-E isn't coming out until later therefore the 6700k (at least for gaming) is a better option.

On the 24th, I was on my way to work. Got a text from nowinstock.net saying that an ASUS 1080 strix OC edition was in stock at new egg. I pulled over and got my order entered in time. 2 minutes later I got an email saying my order was canceled because I entered the wrong expiration date. I checked again and of course, they were sold out. Damn it. I was so pissed.

Last night I looked at my order history on Newegg and it shows the order was not canceled but was on hold. I chatted with customer service and they updated my credit card info. I thought for sure, they took the card I tried to order and sold it. Nope. Apparently they held it. 3 days later and they still had it way after selling out. I'm lucky I checked my order status. So yea, it's in the mail shipped. Nice.

Nice let me know how you like it I have been debating trying to get that one or the gigabyte xtreme one. I am not as concerned about getting the OC edition as I can always just OC it myself and I have heard a fair amount of people have had to RMA the ASUS OC edition as the temps are just getting too high on it. I have to assume since its factory set to be OC people arent being able to drop it down below how it comes shipped? I dont OC a lot and definitely dont sit around trying to max things out knowing the very small performance increases you get for possibly fucking your stuff up haha.

It's really hard to fuck it up due to the voltage cap. Hope I don't get an RMA'ed one. And I'm pretty positive you can downclock them with software. But who would do such a thing? Haha, I'll let you know how it does.

I just want to get one before I start adding games that will make good use of it. For now I have been playing like diablo 3 and such that can max out on the 960 no problem but wanna try out some more graphic intensive games once I get the newer card. FYI I have had no issues with that Dell monitor just turned off the power save mode everyone mentioned in reviews and it was worked like a charm so far and looks great at least to me haha.

Yea my monitor and video card just came in yesterday. I really didn't have a chance to do much with it. I just hooked everything up and ran a few passes with in on Valley to make sure it worked. Everything seems good with the Asus 1080 Strix OC. It put up really good numbers out of the box. Without messing with the fan curves it got up to 80 degrees. Just for giggles I put the fan to 100% and it stayed at 70. But damn it was loud. Tried to run Battlefield 4 and something is up with it. It takes forever to load and I'm assuming its a Windows 10 issue. My temps rose on my CPU as well. I'm going to have to dial back my overclock on the 6700k or buy another Cooler. Ugh

The monitor just looking at it without setting up anything does look a little washed out. But I'll mess with that more tonight. For now I'm stuck at work until 6pm.

So the 1080 has 2.5 stars and a TON of bad reviews on Amazon. I'm seeing lots of driver issues and stuff. I doubt Windows 10 is the issue. Although I guess it could be a driver issue which is related.

Not sure what everyone complains about with Windows 10. It's far better than 7 and 8. Haven't had a single issue with it. Cleaner, smoother, and faster.

My experience hasn't been that great so far. With a new motherboard, cpu, ram, hard drive and video card with a fresh install of windows 7 immediately upgraded to 10, I've experienced glitches and weird hangups. I still have yet to pinpoint the problem but all of my benchmarks and stress testing have run smoothly. I'm about at the point to reinstall windows 10 again and reinstall everything. I'm really hoping it helps.

Reinstalled Windows 10. Now everything is running perfect. There must have been a driver conflict or corrupt file. Anyways, The 5 year old Corsair H80 wasn't doing so well on the 6700k. I just bought a new H80i GT for 69.99 after rebate from newegg. Hoping it keeps it in the 70's at 4.6 ghz at 1.35v on stress tests such as RealBench. Firestrike score with the new Strix 1080 was 19060. The card is freaking awesome.

How have the temps been on the Strix? Thats the one I had been looking at but seen mixed reviews so far. I havent had any windows 10 issues yet but I also didn't upgrade just bought it straight up and did a clean install.

The temps on the Strix are phenomenal. If benching on say firestrike, I place the fan on 100 percent and at 100 percent load it reaches 72 degrees and doesn't go higher. On the stock fan curve it does heat up to 80 but a minor adjustment keeps it at 78 and very quiet. And that's overclocked to over 2100 on the core and 11000 on the memory. Its awesome to say the least.

Is it better for me to rebuild an old pc I have here at the house or to just buy a pre-built "crate engine" type deal?

Depends on a couple factors. Is the old computer a built computer or a brand name such as hp, Lenovo, etc? If its a built computer you can maybe reuse a couple components such as case, hard drive, power supply and optical drives. If it's a brand name I wouldn't mess with it and just buy a new one. Also depends on if you're comfortable with building one.

Has anybody had to file an insurance claim on a home built PC? If so, how do you price this thing? Posted in the weather thread but lightning strike last night blew up my TV and PC. They were plugged into my APC UPS (PC was on battery backup with its monitor, Vizio TV was plugged into surge protection side) and both ate it, but APC has a lightning warranty for equipment plugged in up to $75k. They sent me a questionnaire and I have to list out what was connected. The TV model number covers that no problem, but what do you do for a homebuilt? Just list individual components, or a replacement value?

The other problem is, with APC I have to ship my UPS back to them after they send me one in 3-5 days. Once it arrives, I box mine up and ship it to them at my own cost. Then after they hav received and inspected it for damage, they decide whether or not they will cover my gear. But they only do market value. I could file a renters claim, but my deductible is $500. Also the claim from for APC has a listing for "Does insurance cover these items?" Could they force me to make a claim and just pay my deductible or something. Sorry if I am clueless on this, but prior to last weekend I had never had to file an insurance claim. Now in two weekends I had a raccoon or something run out in front of me and tear up my front bumper on my car and now this!

I hate to be a cynic, but I can't imagine you'll get any money out of APC. I hope I'm wrong tho.
