Just wondering how this will turn out and if any of yall will stick around for both events? We play DUKE on Saturday Jan. 20th on ABC at 3:30 then the Hurricanes host the Tampa Bay Lighting that night at 8:30. Also we play Carolina on Saturday February 3rd at 3:30 on ABC and then the Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins at 8:30. Does that really leave them enough time for the hockey game to start on time? Also how is traffic during this time and do a lot of people just stay in their spots and tailgate for the hockey game? I mean I want to tailgate before the Duke game like 1-3ish and then hang out afterwards and go to the hockey game. Any of yall doing this?

Also this Saturday we are playing BC at 2 and the Canes play the Islanders that night. This is a good way for me to go to my first Canes game since I'll already be there for our game.

those should be around 3 hours between the end of the bball game and the hockey game. I remember one time last year or maybe the year before that they only had like 45 minutes to an hour between the end of bball and hockey.

you can watch what they are doing in there at any time:

If I remember correctly, they can go from basketball to hockey very quickly since all they have to do is take the floor up. They do need significantly more time to put the basketball floor down on top of the hockey floor i believe. I doubt you'll ever seen a noon hockey game (like on a saturday) and a basketball game that night unless it's like a 9pm tip maybe possibly, not a very big chance though.

lower the nets, attach the nets to the glass, rebuild the temporary seats (student seats for basketball) to rise up to the lower concourse seats, and not to mention make it colder~

by the way its kinda funny how they do it on the big games, because if we [impossibly] pull the upset on either one duke or unc, that court better be rushed, (maybe not the duke game, unless they don't lose or something), and that'll take even longer to get everyone off of it

game over at 5:30-5:40, everyone is out by 5:55-6:05, doors normally would open at 7:30 (one hour before), skating begins about 8:00.

essentially 90-115 minutes to do the changeover before letting people in, add 30 just to have it ready to skate on but still let people in (although that'd look kinda weird)

Well hott damn, I think I might stick around, not this saturday even though we play BC then it goes into a hockey game but for the duke and carolina games I am going to stick around maybe go to damons for a few beers and come back in for the game, that or go sit out at my car and booze it up. GO PACK AND CANES!

Only thing I dont like about that video is that the State game in question was part of the Hispanic College Fund Classic or whatever, so the place is almost empty. Id really like to see a new one where the place is packed for basketball....whats the program used? I might try to make it myself.

you left out a shit ton of stuff.

Handicap ramps, the GDS, raise the side seats, production notes, It will be done in about 1 hour on Saturday, and you are somewhat correct that it takes more time to go from hockey to basketball.

Also, the temperature does not need to be lowered for the hockey game. It only feels warmer because the sub flooring is in place during basketball, but as soon as the subfloor is removed the building gets cold.

my gf (who used to work at RBC) says that they do an entire sweep of the building, clear everyone out and clean everything. she also said that 90 minutes is just about the absolute minimum to switch evertyhing over.

^^ Production notes don't matter down at ice level, since that dumb bastard of a "hockey announcer" couldn't get a penalty call right if you fed it directly into his brain.

When they had to switch it over quickly last year it fucked up the tempo of the game as they moved all the students from the goals.

i'm not saying changing the floor. there's more than just that to be done. i'm talking about time from shutting the doors on the basketball people and opening the doors for the hockey people.

well i take the word of my girlfriend over some jackass on the wolfweb any day. plus: other people have to do work than just the floor crew.

but the majority of the shit that has to be done is done by us, the floor crew. We change seating, pickup/place the bball floor and subfloor, work on glass, and do the production notes throughout the building. most of the time we have to wait on the other employees to get their shti done before we can do ours.

so can the entire switchover be done in less than 90 minutes or not? i seriously want to know. i'll take that you guys can get the floor done in less than that. but that is by no means the entire process.

we did it today officially in an hour and 20 minutes. that was not counting going back and checking to make sure everything was done. when you calculate that in along with a few other misc. items that are usually done right before the game anyway, it took us right at 90 min, plus/minus a few minutes.

Quote :
"Even during most non-skating events, the ice is always there. MacMillan explains that the conversion process is fairly complex. "For NC State basketball games, we make an ice deck using 4-by-8 sheets of plywood to cover the ice. Then we put the basketball floor over that. For non-hockey shows, we also take down the glass surrounding the rink. It takes six to eight hours to change from the ice rink to the basketball court." MacMillan says the ice is only broken up and hauled out "for the circus, because they make points in the floor to hold the trapeze and other things, or for a truck pull.""

I suppose it's a lot easier to tear down the basketball court than it is to erect it?

that is correct. The biggest problem with the basketball court is finding the center.
