ok well since this has turned into a knc bash fest im going try and address everything.

first off

Quote :
"knc is just pissed that it isn't ballsy enough to have an identity that anyone can actually latch onto. (see WUAG, WQFS, (or WXYC sorta) for examples of stations with balls to play what they think is good -- as opposed to what they think people want to hear)"

I went to both the WUAG and the WQFS websites and the majority of their playlists are cmj pushed indie rock. Joanna Newsom was played 3 times in under 3 hours on WUAG. Give me a fuckin break. WQFS obviously doesnt update their webpage but their top 30 is a collection of "hot" cmj artists including Calexico, Secret Machines, the arctic monkeys and Matisyahu.

you obviously enjoy the hipster ready indie rock in which cmj pushes and I have no problem with that. If thats the "identity" that people latch on to WUAG and WQFS for then thats fine with me but count me out.

second

Quote :
"*note: WUAG sponsored this concert in greensboro and if it didn't sell out, the theater looked pretty packed. i'm sure they made their money back and then some. when was the last time wknc did something like that?"

WKNC puts on the Double Barreled benifit ever year. The next one is in Feb and is going to have 8 bands over two nights and will sell out Kings which has a cap of 250 I think.

We also just had a show at Slim's with Caltrop and Transportation and Slims was packed. If you dont like those bands then poop on you

also WKNC does have the audience but not just in the "indie" rock market. Alot of our listeners come from afterhours. If you only like Indie rock then theres nothing I can do about that.

and to close, CMJ is the devil and I have no hard feelings im just trying to answer some questions. It makes me sad when people dont like knc but we arnt perfect and we try our best.

^i'm assuming they played newsom on wuag since they were promoting a concert of hers they put on this week.

and mostly what i like about wuag and wqfs is that they give their dj's far more lattitude than it seems is allowed wknc. the shows have identity. sure the top lists are probably goign to be similar to the top playlists for other colleges, but they also play plenty of other stuff from all over the map.

i'm sure you've never actually listened to either of the stations and are just talking shit from a completely ignorant point of view because you're getting defensive about your dear little station.

ya damn right.

as far as I care the Djs on knc have 100% freedom. Now this isnt the case all the time because playing rock during the afterhours time period is a no no but I have no control over that.

and you obviously dont listen to knc. You turn it on and hear a song you dont like and then conclude that it must suck. Well I just did that for both WUAG and WQFS. sucks doesnt it.

also I requested White Octave a few years ago when driving through greensboro and they had no idea what I was talking about so that rubbed me the wrong way.

the last hour of knc was this...

1:17PM Dinosaur Jr. Repulsion
1:12PM Spoon Something to look Forward To
1:10PM Superchunk Detroit Has A Skyline
1:10PM Ben Folds Five Zak And Sara
1:04PM The Clash Clash City Rockers
1:02PM The Horrors Sheena is a Parasite
12:56PM Buffalo Killers San Martine Des Morelle
12:52PM Call Me Lightning Pizza Party
12:49PM Richard Hell and the Viodiods Blank Generation
12:46PM Dan Bryk Summer Heroine
12:43PM Stephen Malkmus The Hook
12:37PM Melvins A History of Bad Men
12:33PM Vaz Headless Statue
12:30PM The Black Keys Elevator
12:25PM Pinback Microtonic Wave
12:19PM The New Lou Reeds You Dont Have to Die
12:14PM Refused Worms of the Senses/Faculties...
12:09PM Yo La Tengo Mr. Tough
12:06PM Anders Parker So it Goes
12:04PM Tall Hands Three Full Virginias
11:56AM Oakley Hall House Carpenter

but i dont want to be a dick, listen to what you want. Its a free country. I just get defensive.

you did that for wqfs? really? how'd you pull that off? are you in greensboro? i'm pretty sure they don't stream anything, seeing as there isn't even a computer IN the control room.

and yes, i used to listen to knc a fair amount for a while and i got frustrated with its mediocrity (see my posts in the wknc thread).

and man when i was in greensboro on saturday i was glad to get my indie fix with wuag with some Jackson Five. They've been tearing up the CMJ charts for months now. I hear their new album has leaked and it's awesome. That little michael is SO adorable

let's end this tomfoolery, combine brain power and figure out how to get 300 cute-ish indie girls in one room here in raleigh.

^agreed. i just like to take out my stress on wknc sometimes. i really think knc would step up its game if there were two players in town like there are in greensboro. oh well.

According to Pitchfork:

Quote :
"Newsom is preparing an EP to be released on Drag City in April titled... Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band."

Ahahahaa, what a title.

I don't remember what I posted in this thread before, but I have a new description for Joanna Newsom:

She's a female Daniel Johnston, with twenty times the musicianship and a tenth of the pop sense.

that video of her playing some as yet unreleased new song was awesome. does this bttt mean that she's going to actually release something now?! or is she too busy modeling and fucking andy samberg?

(video of "new" song for those interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL0T1yUYkbs)

it makes me sad that no one recorded that "secret show" she did where she played pretty much an entire new album worth of songs
