I'm thinking about joining in the new year since my schedule will be too crazy to go to Carmichael. Let me know what kind of contracts they have and how nice the place is.

Just signed up like a month ago. $100 for 15 months... can go 3 days a week. So I chose M, W & F. Or 15 months $200 everyday. I figure I won't feel like going everyday... walk my pups the other days of the week.

The times I've tried there it was way too crowded. In the midst of switching from The Gold's at North Hills (only member there because they bought out Pulse on Highwoods awhile back) to the O2 Fitness at Falls Ridge. They cap their membership so you don't have the crowding and waiting.

I re-read the contract and the only thing it points it is that they can change "Rules and Regulations." Last time I checked, that has to do with towel service, machine use, hours, etc....NOT fees.

The only improvement I've seen at the downtown gym is a juice bar...yeah, like I'm going to use that

The machines need to be cleaned/maintained better. They better not DARE tell me that this $25 is going to help that...these issues have been going on long before the increased cost of energy, etc. from Katrina (that's supposedly affecting them).

I absolutely hate the CapFit on Glenwood South, but that's just me. Make sure you make good use of the 5-day trial passes that they keep giving out, and then sign a contract if you are sure you like it!

^just curious, but why do you hate that one? I'm a bit miffed about this $25 fee, but otherwise I happen to like the Glenwood South gym.

Because it's too small. I mean their equipment is nice and all, but there are no seperate areas for weights and cardio, it's all in one big room, and then there is the women's room and group fitness room, that's it. The stretching area is so tiny. So you almost always have to wait to use any machine during peak hours, and I always keep running into people (literally!) while going from the treadmill to the water fountain. In short, it's a clusterfuck during peak hours, which I don't like.

That and the fact that I don't know of any plans that they have of expansion (or do they?) and no cap on membership either, so it only gets worse from here.

^they were supposed to expand the place and add an area for additional cardio machines back in July. Never happened, now there is just a bunch of building materials sitting on a pallet in the middle of the floor.

I tend to get there sometime between 7:30-8pm. The only time it's jam packed is at the start of the week. By Wednesday (Tuesday on some weeks) it simmers down and I'm able to use what I want when I want.

yeah no one pay the fee......a bunch of lawyers are trying to fight it

i might write a letter to the N&O explaining that i'll gladly pay an extra $25 if it means we'll get nicer, newer and more machines

oh and machines that work

that too!

and what about that "expansion" they promised they were starting in August.....i still havent seen anything being done

it seems most of the treadmills are breaking down. they either don't incline, don't go, the heartrate monitor doesnt work, or the tv doesnt work. I can deal without the tv, but the other stuff is crucial.

they've upgraded the machines at the capital fitness off of 64 in mcgregor village - and they're getting more new machines in and building a "cardio deck" on the upper level as well - I don't go to any of the other locations but that one has improved significantly within the past year.

I still think the fee is bullshit - especially since they're not charging it to all members (members through NIEHS - and possibly all gov't organizations - dont have to pay it - I know NIEHS members don't for certain).

^^ I don't think most grown males could handle a pilates cless, or even a mid level yoga class.

Update on the $25 fee:
http://www.wral.com/news/5883804/detail.html

Basically, those who signed a newer contract may have to pay, but those with the older contract won't have to. Future contracts will specify "Club membership may from time to time, change the rules and regulations governing the operations of the Club. The Club reserves the right to charge an upfit fee of $25 annually for facility improvements at its discretion."

Just charge $25 more annually. We all know that they'll charge it every year no matter what just to pocket more income

i just got a free year through my apartment complex...i'm a night owl so what's it like there at 1am? crowded or what? and this isn't the gym with the basketball courts is it?

nope it isnt. And at 1am its going to be practically empty. I was in there tonight about 8 and it was damn near empty.

They gave me an offer for a "student" rate of

$49 membership fee + $29 a month OR

$49 membership fee + $299 for 15 months.

so basically fuck that, im going to use my 12 days and deal with the carmichael hours unless I can get a helaciously better deal through one of yall.

The gym was horrendous other than having digital cable in the treadmills.

The locker room was fucking dirty as hell, the place is one giant room, which has got to be so fucking loud during the day, I don't see how anyone concentrates. They had a small number of key machines, so I can see how you couldnt get anything done during the day, waiting in line, etc.

And basically no area(s) for stretching and other non-weight exercises. They dont even have freaking jump ropes.

Being open 24/7 is VERY enticing though and I may still get a membership just for that reason alone (are any other gyms in town open all night?)

I'll put in a good word for O2, its a nice place, never really crowded, and all the equipment works and is in good shape.

And there's some attractive rich cary women that work out there, thats always a plus

Thanks to everyone who just posted that I should join O2

YOU ARE WORTHLESS.

Had I wanted to go to 02, I would have, but the only gym more convenient for me is big ape and that's a shit hole. So I'm going to capital fitness.

Now, who wants to be my workout buddy?
