I heard the same thing. They had to evacuate quite a few oil rigs in the gulf due to the hurricane. Many were damaged, and oil is going up to around $70 a barrel. Fill up while you can.

A fill up now may save you $8 max from the next time, not including the money you waste driving there and back, and the time.

If you could fill up a 1000 gallon drum, yeah, it's worth it. Not for an 18 gallon car tank.

sucks that this is price gouging doesn't it?
the oil we are using today and tomorrow does not come directly from the earth. it would take months or years for the oil extracted today to reach the market and into your car.

fucking oil companies.
and you know they are going to get those disabled rigs back into action then they aren't going to lower the prices.

Dude, the oil companies have a tangential role. Oil is a commodity. Gasoline prices have been bid up in the open market... supply has been tight for years now and any disruption like this causes gas prices to shoot up. There can be some price gouging probably on a more local level, but gasoline closed at $2.22 Tuesday on the open commodities market. Add on what, 40 or 50 cents for taxes and then allow suppliers and the gas station to make a couple pennies per gallon and something near $3 a gallon isn't so outrageous.

2 pipelines going to NC from Louisiana were cut off in the hurricane. A lot of places have run out already for the week, and the entire state, unless something happens, will run out by Monday, if not Sunday. The Governor has said for everyone to conserve. He has said all use of state vehicles, other than like the H.P., will cease starting tomorrow. Many state government workers will be laid off by next week until the state can afford to have them come back and do their jobs.

Just heard that the big tanks in Greensboro are being shut down!

do yall just like to make shit up?
there are two main pipelines coming this way from louisiana that had problems, the plantation and colonial. there were power losses along the louisiana segments, but no damage to the pipelines. the colonial is suppose to be at 30 percent in the morning, and 60 percent by the weekend. i don' know about the plantation. these gas stations don't get shipments all day everyday. they ran out because everyone and there mama freaked and filled up today. they are NOT laying of any government workers till they can pay them. what the fuck does that have to do with the price of gas?

everyone needs to calm the fuck down and pay their 3 bucks a gallon.

^^Yes. I am from the Mt. Airy/Pilot Mt. area, and my girl said that it was madness at like 9:30 in Dobson. She said her mom had to go in and stand inside as collateral before she could pump, so there was no way that she would not leave w/o paying and getting her mom.

She also said that gas had ran out in Mt. Airy and that people were coming to Dobson and Elkin to get gas.

^And put your money where your mouth is bub. My father in law is an engineer for NCDOT, and he said there will be temporary layoffs starting Friday. It has to do with gas b/c highway workers use a crazy amount of state gas everyday while on the job. You cut out them using their vehicles, then some can't work for long, like survey crews and road crews, so you have to lay them off for a while.

^ yup
pipelines are fine, just the stupid oil companies are taking advantage of the situation to make *gasp* more money...

Shit, we have the cheapest gas prices in the world (besides some middle-eastern countries). Canada pays atleast 3-4 bucks per gallon and in europe its like 4 bucks or more.

People need to stop driving in the american fashion that everyone out there is racing you. Remember, that minivan is hauling kids, not a hemi (well it could, but it'll still kick the crap out of your civic)

I know the US has had comparitively cheap gas for a while now - however the oil compaines that refine/supply it were not losing money even with $2/gallon gas about a year ago.

It's the greed that pisses me off - 'gee, if europeans pay $4/gallon, we could be getting much more from the us - all of it pure profit'

I understand that the $4/gallon in other countries is due to much higher taxes included - but they get roads and public transportation out of it

in this country, we get falling apart highways and the oil execs get another maybach or private yacht, depending on the year.

^ Once again, gasoline is bid up on the open market. The oil companies have pricing power but there is still competition, not collusion. Consumers are freaking out and that's causing the prices to be bid up. There might be some price gouging here and there but I can guarantee you that the gas stations around campus aren't making any money on this gas.
