http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/09/google-liberates-data-makes-it-easier-to-leave-the-cloud.ars

Quote :
"This sort of thing will still worry privacy advocates, but those concerned more with data portability should find a lot to like in Google's announcement today of its new Data Liberation Front. The Front is an in-house engineering team with a simple mission statement: "Users own the data they store in any of Google's products. Our team's goal is to give users greater control by making it easier for them to move data in and out."

The team works with all of Google's product managers to make sure that services from Gmail to Maps to Orkut to Analytics to YouTube all provide a "way out" when users decide to take their data to another service. As a site that makes most of its advertising money on the back of user-generated content (Web searches, e-mail, etc.), this seems like a smart long-term move—which is exactly Google's plan.

"We'd rather have loyal users who use Google products because they're innovative —not because they lock users in," said today's announcement. "You can think of this as a long-term strategy to retain loyal users, rather than the short-term strategy of making it hard for people to leave.""

But really, users will just be able "to take [a copy of] their data to another service", right? Just wanted to make sure I wasn't reading this as a removal service so much as a portability service. Either way, I'll still continue to use Google's services as long as they remain innovative.

I don't think I've seen this mentioned in this thread so far, but it's a trending topic over on twitter.

So google wants to help save the news industry with a new system to charge for content:

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/09/09/google-offers-to-help-newspapers-charge-for-their-content/

Quote :
"The search giant is planning to upgrade its existing Google Checkout payment service to handle a broad suite of billing and subscription services targeted at premium content creators like newspapers, according to a memo the company recently submitted to the Newspaper Association of America.

The memo, which went online this week, responds to the NAA’s open request for new “paid content” solutions earlier this summer. It was first spotted by the Nieman Journalism Lab.

In its memo, Google says it is working on new Checkout features that will allow publishers to charge prices of a penny to several dollars for digital content, like news stories. Behind the scenes, Google will handle all the messy features related to payments, like aggregating the charges to reduce credit card fees, security and fraud. As for timing, it says only that the service is “planned for future.”"

I can think of a couple of criticisms right off:

1. Will Checkout get better than it is now? Apparently it's gonna be used for premium content on sites like YouTube first.
2. Will people pay for news when they can get it elsewhere for free?

I don't have any reasons why #1 won't get fixed, but as for #2, I think a lot of people overrate free news content. The pay services will have the resources to hire better staff, and the news suffers the most when you don't have good staff doing investigative work. Free newspapers haven't been what's hurt the newspaper industry so far. I would hope that people would be more willing to get pay content from a Washington Post or New York Times or WSJ, as it would be of a higher quality than independent, written-in-spare-time blog content, but who knows? I overestimate people.

More proposals for how to make internet news profitable and save the papers from Microsoft and Cisco were also submitted, but you have to have a reg. to see them here: http://www.naa.org/resources/articles/paid-content-platforms/paid-content-platforms.aspx

i am pretty worried about the hit to bloggers. what will they be able to reference/quote? blogging, while different from traditional news media in important ways, has been a great democratizing force in the news business. i would hate for it to be significantly quieted by lawsuits and threats for simply talking about stories on pay sites.

I am sympathetic to the issues facing bloggers. I am one. However, having seen my girlfriend go through the newspaper industry and watching how difficult it is to retain serious talent with the lack of resources, I am seriously worried about what NOT finding new revenue streams will do to the serious news (ie: news where people get paid). You've already had big city newspapers laying off investigative reporters and people doing the local beat. Unfortunately, pay recruits good, big time reporters who get to the bottom of stories and do much of the true democratizing/muckraking.

Finally ... Gmail Sync == Exchange Server ... even better, my Palm Pre let's me connect to multiple Exchange Servers, which means Work and Gmail Sync can co-exist, love it.

"Google Sync: Now with push Gmail support
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 8:00 AM

Earlier this year, we launched Google Sync which allows you to synchronize your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with your iPhone, Windows Mobile, and S60 devices. Today, we're adding Gmail support to Google Sync for iPhone, iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices.

Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Sync works with your phone's native email application so there's no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three."

I've got my push gmail set to "no limit", yet it doesn't seem to fetch anything older than ~1month. Anyone getting this? Hopefully it's fixed soon.

I can't even get my emails to come through with activesync. Calendar and contacts work fine. When Email is checked I get what appears to be a generic error or it gives sync confirmation but nothing shows up.

Also, does anyone actually use the contact sync function? I physically sync with outlook because a lot of my contacts are organized from "File As" and that seems to get lost on Google. Taking a chance that maybe someone shares this problem and has found a solution.

Mail sends fine but it won't sync new messages

Ah, default Inbox was not what I needed. I put a check next to sync "All Mail" and that seems to work.

[Edited on September 24, 2009 at 2:55 PM. Reason : ]

Now to figure out why all new mail is bypassing the typical Inbox and going to [GMail]/All Mail

I disabled IMAP and re-established my sync relationship and that seemed to clear up the mishap.

I myself wouldn't use Chrome as an add-on. I've not been able to pull myself away from Safari quite yet, but when I have used Chrome, I've been pleased.

Anyone tried Chrome as an add-on?
