i thought this thread was going to be about places to shit between charlotte and asheville.

my dad plays in a golf tourney every year in Maggie Valley. He and his partner always take a scenic route out there by going from charlotte to gafney, SC and then i think it's route 11 which is a scenic highway. It's one of those recognized NC scenic routes so i'm sure you can find some info on it. He always talks about it being a nice drive.add: that may be a little out of the question for asheville, but as the poster said above 64/74 will take you through chimney rock and Lake Lure which is nice. Hendersonville is adorable. Brevard is cute too (cool restaurant there called Square Root, and Jordan Street Cafe usually has gigs and a great brunch). Pisgah Forest is right at the intersection of 64 and 276, and there's some lovely spots in there (as well as a swimming hole, Coon Tree). You can go tubing down the Davidson River too, that's fun. Graveyard Fields is really cool. Chimney Rock is always busy, and it's not bad. I'd do it at least once. Lake Lure is pretty to drive through, but I've never done anything in there.Asheville is great. Lots of cool spots to eat.... Doc Chey's Noodle House is delicious and decently priced, Tupelo Honey Cafe is nice and you get a good view of what's going on, Chocolate Fetish Shop has lots of cool chocolately things, Old Europe is a great coffee/bar cafe with a cool atmosphere... Jack of the Woods is a cool bar, they usually have live gigs going on in there. Friday nights there's the drum circle in the small park area, just a bunch of hippies hitting drums really. Scandals is a fun techno/gay club (nice for girls because you don't get hit on), but that only gets good around 12:30 and usually only on weekends or Thursday nights. Definitely check out the local music scene, there's ALWAYS someone playing somewhere. There's also a free and very large gallery of random crafts and art on... Haywood Ave I think. On the way from Charlotte is King's Mountain, and you can take a cool tour and learn about the Civil War and things that happened there. There should also, if you take 74 through Lake Lure and Chimney, be tons of little produce stands and things to stop at to get fresh mountain produce and honey. Yum.I went to Brevard College for 2 years and drove a lot between Charlotte and Asheville. The drive on highway 9 I think (which meets up with 74) is nice, as is 74 and 64 through Hendersonville. And there are some great little places.OH, and there's some badass German restaurant and deli like 10 minutes outside of Hendersonville... I ate there once, best sausages ever. Can't remember the name for the life of me.^ ooooo! Let us know how that goes, I would love to try and work up there. Biltmore is gorgeous, and I always thought it'd be cool to stay up there (though expensive). [Edited on April 13, 2009 at 1:06 PM. Reason : ^]
